Museum of the City of Lodz -- Muzeum Miasta Łodzi ma swą siedzibę w jednym z najbardziej efektownych budynków Łodzi, dawnym Pałacu Poznańskich.

Museum

Museum of the City of Lodz is an interdisciplinary facility, collecting antique items from many fields of social life, history, culture and art of the city and professional library with particularly valuable collection of prints connected with Lodz. Previous program activity shows that both historic exhibitions, especially those concerning art, and artistic events, which go beyond the local scope, make the Museum to be perceived as an open facility which meets social expectations and seeks its supporters.

Reconstructed according to original purpose palace interior with partly saved furnishings and decor serves as exhibition and may also be used as a concert hall. Aside from superficiality of ceremonies and artistic events, we do the job which visitors have no idea about, although its results are visible at every turn. The result of this job are exhibitions, publishing, conducted conservation works and obtained, inventoried and developed items which increase the museum collections.

The Museum has also ambitious plans for the coming years. Its main goal is accomplishment of facility management and its further revitalization program (restoration of hothouse, so called winter garden, full of exotic flora that was originally located on the second floor of the palace, acqusition of new souvenirs after well-known personalities to extend Pantheon of the Great Lodz Citizens)

The Museum spreads cultural, artistic and aesthetic values and shapes cognitive sensitivity by informing about collected sets and enabling contact with them. Teaching through enjoyment and being in a somewhat archaic, ”ancient” surroundings, full of mysteries, raises young people’s interest in the mechanism of the past and develops the habit of communing with the culture and visiting museums or galleries. As a part of the educational program, the Museum workers lead classes based on exhibitions, using not only values of the exhibition, but also the most interesting items. Transfer of knowledge about the history of Lodz in its various aspects as well as shaping proper attitude towards the past and tradition of multi-cultural city and teaching tolerance for dissimilarities and religious differences are the essence of the program.

The offer for the youngests was created as a part of the educational program, adjusting the topics and methods to the age of children. The suggested activities allow for the transfer of knowledge and capacity development, they stimulate the emotional development, curiosity and interests of children.

Budowa rezydencji, często porównywanej do paryskiego Luwru, służyła łódzkiej burżuazji przemysłowej do osiągnięcia prestiżu i utrwalenia swojej tożsamości.

Projektował i realizował ją Adolf Zelingson, a nadzór nad nią przyjął Franciszek Chełmiński. Prace ukończono w 1903 roku. W tym czasie rezydencja uzyskała kształt architektoniczny podobny do dzisiejszego.

O rodzinie

Doskonale skojarzone małżeństwo dochowało się licznego potomstwa (siedmioro dzieci: Ignacy, Herman, Karol, Maurycy, Anna, Joanna Natalia i zmarła w niemowlęctwie Felicja).

Izrael z ambicjami dziedzica rodzinnego majątku rozszerzył działalność handlową, podejmując jednocześnie produkcję tkanin w systemie nakładczym. Ułatwiły mu to predyspozycje zawodowe wsparte edukacją progimnazjalną i praktyką fachową.
Izrael Poznański w ciągu niespełna pół wieku pomnożył majątek o wartości 2.150 rubli do sumy 11 milionów.

Niepowodzenia finansowe w czasie I wojny światowej i w okresie międzywojennym przyniosły zmiany w zarządzaniu firmą. W latach 30. XX wieku przedsiębiorstwo przeszło w ręce przedstawicieli włoskiego Banca Commerciale Italiana, a Poznańscy nie zdołali nigdy odzyskać wiodącej roli w spółce.
Po wybuchu II wojny światowej, 18 września 1939 roku, przedsiębiorstwo i inne obiekty Towarzystwa Akcyjnego Wyrobów Bawełnianych I. K. Poznańskiego przeszły pod komisaryczny zarząd niemiecki, a dwa miesiące później, po wywłaszczeniu polskich i żydowskich akcjonariuszy, w ręce Głównego Urzędu Powierniczego Wschód (Haupttreuhandelstelle-Ost). Następnie fabrykę, po przejęciu udziałów włoskich, przekazano łódzkim Niemcom - Speidelowi i Weberowi, a firma zmieniła nazwę na „Aktion Gesellschaft der Baumwollmanufactur Speidel und Weber et co. K.G”.

PIONEERS
Matakohe and nearby districts were first settled in 1862 by Albertlanders. The Albertlanders were an organised group of English emigrants who settled around Port Albert in the Kaipara Harbour.
Recreation of an old laundry

New settlers to the northern part of New Zealand arrived in Auckland by sailing ship. To get to Matakohe the settlers sailed across the Waitemata Harbour to Riverhead, travelled overland by foot or bullock cart to Helensville, and then sailed across the Kaipara Harbour to eventually reach Matakohe via Port Albert and Pahi.

On arrival, their first task was to erect a dwelling on their block of land. A clearing was made in the dense impenetrable bush and the settlers each built a simple structure using light manuka stakes and nikau palm fronds. These were followed by more substantial homes built with split palings, pit sawn timber and later sawn timber from steam driven sawmills.

The first industry was rope making, using the native flax fibre. This was soon surpassed by the Northland kauri timber and kauri gum industries. The bush was laboriously cleared using axes, saws and fire. Gradually, farming was established and is now the basis of the economy.

The Kauri Museum is Northland’s best heritage attraction and the ideal location to learn all about the pioneer culture in Matakohe. Click here to read more about new developments at our Northland museum.

Ivana Kobilca (20 December 1861–4 December 1926) is the most prominent Slovene woman painter and a key figure of Slovene cultural identity. - Ivana Kobilca (20. december 1861-4 december 1926) je najbolj znan slovenski ženska slikarka in ključna osebnost slovenske kulturne identitete.

She was a realist painter who studied and worked in Vienna, Munich, Paris, Sarajevo, Berlin, and Ljubljana. She mostly painted oil paintings and pastels, whereas her drawings are few. The themes include still lifes, portraits, genre works, allegories, and religious scenes. She has been contradictory and criticised, because she followed movements that had not developed further in later periods.

Ivana Kobilca was born in Ljubljana as a daughter in a wealthy family of a crafstman. Her parents gave great emphasis on education. At first, she learned how to draw, but also French and Italian, in the Ursuline High School in her home town, where her teacher of drawing was Ida Künl. When she was 16, she went with her father to Vienna, where she saw the paintings of old masters that inspired her. From 1879 to 1880, she studied in Vienna, and from 1880 to 1881 in Munich, where she copied the paintings at the gallery of the Academy of Arts.

From 1882 to 1889, she continued her studies under Alois Erdtelt. In 1888, she participated for the first time in a public exhibition. At the following exhibition in Munich, her work was spotted and praised by the prominent German art historian Richard Muther. and then returned to Ljubljana. In 1890, she painted in Zagreb. In 1891 and 1892, she painted in Paris in the private school of Henri Gervex.

She became an honorary member (membre associée) of Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. In 1892, she also painted in Barbizon. In 1893, she returned to Ljubljana, visited Florence in 1894, and lived in Sarajevo from 1897 to 1905. From 1906 to 1914, she lived in Berlin, and then returned to Ljubljana. At her death in 1926 in Ljubljana, she was described as the greatest Yugoslav woman painter.

Judging by her social origin, way of living, ideals and work, she was an urban artist. She is one of Slovene realists, who created their most important paintings in the 1880s. Kobilca's greatest tribute to Slovenian art was made during the time she lived abroad. Her greatest impact was on figural painting, especially portraits and paintings of typical people's lives in rustic or urban places.

Since the time she had spent in Berlin, her most important genre became floral still life. Her early work reflects characteristics of München studio-work. The main colors are dark and brownish, only the pastels are light and rosy. From 1889 onwards her painting became lighter with blue nuances, typical for Parisian art at the time.

From here on, many artists took the next step that led into Impressionism, but Ivana Kobilca did not. In the latest period of her work, her ability to create fresh and interesting paintings started to fade. With some exceptions, her works of that period are dull and impersonal.

Kobilca's best known paintings are Kofetarica (Coffeemadam), 1888; Citrarica (Zitherist), Likarice (Women Ironers), 1891; Holandsko dekle (Dutch Girl), Portret sestre Fani (Portrait of Sister Fani), 1889; and Poletje (Summer), 1889. Her work is on display in all major European galleries.
