Victoria and Albert Museum. The world's leading museum of art and design. Japanese Art & Design - Shape and Balance

As the world's leading museum of art and design, the V&A enriches people's lives by promoting the practice of design and increasing knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the designed world.

Japanese Art & Design

Shape is an important element of Japanese style and decoration. The most obvious forms are those based on the square and rectangle, which are used for lacquer boxes, chests, screens and some ceramics. Rectangles, which represent an artificial form not often found in nature, are used to create the T-shaped outline of the kimono. Curved and circular shapes arc thought to suggest intuition and inspiration

Many objects contain elements of both forms. For example, though lacquer boxes, screens and kimono are rectangular in shape, they may be decorated with curving, fluid patterns using natural motifs. Samurai costume consists of both angular and curved elements; samurai were meant to have insight as well as strength. Unornamented surfaces are an essential part of the Japanese decorative repertoire. Plain surfaces are valued as highly as patterned, just as the silences in classical Japanese music are thought to be as important as the notes played. 'Quiet' space provides a balance to 'noisy' ornament. This can most easily be seen on regular forms. You will find ceramics decorated with a small picture and a large amount of background, prints with plain backgrounds or with a high proportion of unprinted paper, and decorated lacquer boxes and screens that display large areas of black unadorned lacquer.

Japanese decoration often divides a surface diagonally, balancing a design with space across a diagonal plane. This breaks up the regular geometry of a polygon giving an impression of asymmetry.

Museos: Las Recreaciones Virtuales

A história de Pernambuco, Brasil, no Museu do Instituto Arqueológico -- The history of Pernambuco, Brazil, in the Museum of the Archaeological Institute.

Carruagem ingles do século 19 e a

Opened in 1866, the museum is one of the oldest in operation in Brazil. It works in a building of the Hospice Street, in Recife Center

English chariot of the 19th century and
changes in last transport

The architect José Luiz Mota Menezes usually define the museum of the Archaeological Institute, History and Geography Pernambucano as a haven in troubled city. Makes sense. The building is located on bustling's Hospice, in Recife's center. Inside, the time is another, immortalized in everyday objects of aristocrats, slaves, religious and revolutionary who helped build our history.

Opened in 1866, the Museum of the Archaeological Institute is the first of the state and one of the oldest in operation in the country, with 149 years. The floor of the rooms keep relics like the sword with which José de Barros Lima, the Lion Crowned, sparked the revolution of March 6, 1817, Magna Date of Pernambuco. The bicentennial of the separatist movement will be celebrated in 2017. "It's one of the main parts of the museum," says historian and partner of George Cabral entity.

In the list of curious objects there is a 19th century toilet made in London, but the wood is veneered with rosewood from Brazil. The mobile, full of drawers, kept in the bedroom. One of the drawers hid the potty, another rested a pot with clean water for hygiene of the body, says George

Arruar chairs where women and priests were carried by slaves, they are also on display. "It was a means of transport not only for women themselves out of flooded streets, muddy, urine, dead animals and live animals. In litters, they locomoviam privately, "explains the historian.

The museum of the institute is a good place for the visitor put a face to people we know only as the name of streets and avenues. On the walls there are pictures with advisor Pictures Rosa e Silva, Sigismund Gonçalves Nunes Machado, Manuel Borba, Boa Vista and Conde Gervasio Pires. The latter, says George, was one of the leaders of Beberibe Convention which kept Pernambuco independent court in Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon from October 1821 to September 1822.

Another interesting piece - and which refers to a very current debate about breastfeeding in public - is an image of Our Lady of the Milk, which was removed from Catholic churches in the late 18th century by order of the Vatican. "The picture shows Our Lady breastfeeding, so it was forbidden," says George.

"Most importantly, when entering a museum, it is out of it knowing something to be seen. And the piece speaks if you can talk to her. Reorganized objects for this purpose, "says José Luiz, president of the Archaeological Institute. The entity receives the public Monday to Friday from 9h to 17h and on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm. Admission to the museum, the house of 130 Asylum Street, costs R $ 2.

Since 2014 the building has a lift for visitors with mobility problems, tactile floor and captions in Braille for the blind and gained new garden with benches for those who want to sit back, take ownership of the space and contemplate a bronze cannon from the 17th century, the old West India Company, the company that financed the Dutch occupation in the Northeast of Brazil, 1630-1654.

It is this garden that leads to the library, considered one of the best in history of Pernambuco, the quality of works, said José Luiz. "We have material for research in history, cartography, geography and tourism. We expanded the physical area and we are now hygienizing books. The collection includes wills and inventories have received the Court of Pernambuco, rich material for study, "he says.
