The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto

What is contemporary art? It can be defined as any and every creative work fashioned out of this ever-changing world in which we live. Out of the totality of art born at any given time, there are some works which may surprise one with their atypical ideas or expressions; but these are of course only genuine reflections of our present age.

The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto is committed to being adaptive with its handling of the rich and varied artworks out there and aims to introduce the versatility of contemporary art as it is intertwined with tradition and history.
The social role of art is being re-evaluated globally, and art culture as a whole continues to gain significance. Indeed, we now know that art does not merely animate cities, it drastically changes them. I for one am confident that art will become a more intimate part of our lives more so than ever before.
Alongside comparatively recognizable works of established artists and styles, the museum promises to offer no shortage of avant-garde exhibitions and events, where visitors can encounter radically new colors, forms, lights and sounds.

Art permeates every aspect of our lives and has an uncanny ability to unite all individuals and peoples. Our mission is to harness the power of art in order to make this city even richer and more wonderful. The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto finds itself in the heart of the city and will beat and pulse with the people as they gather and disperse into their separate and shared lives.

-
The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto primarily features contemporary art pieces, offering world-class exhibitions from home and abroad, while conducting art research and engaging in educational activities. It offers an accessible and welcoming atmosphere that is open to patrons all over the world. The museum is committed to introducing artists currently active in Kumamoto and Kyushu Island, and aims to provide a space where other locally based artists can showcase their efforts to exhibit the extraordinary art and culture of Kumamoto both nationally and internationally.

Promoting the power of art
As art is created by human beings, its essence cannot be separated from the familiar thoughts of everyday human life. Occasionally, art can of course stimulate to such an extent as to forever change the way one views oneself. By exhibiting such stimulating artworks, we offer our visitors the potential to transform themselves and the way they go about their lives.
Cultivating art appreciation

Art is omnipresent; it permeates every inch of our living space. If we would only open our eyes we would see that art is not in some distant realm but is right here, right now. By experiencing one of the museum’s many programs, you will begin to learn how to incorporate art into your own life and let it live with you. Our educational programs provoke the insight that all things, even the city in which one lives, are themselves unique works of art.
Uniting people and designing cities with art
Art has the power to unite the individual with a community. It is only through such forms as: fine arts; music; drama; design; fashion; advertisements; broadcasting and film that a city becomes a creative entity able to harness its own energy into a self-generating cycle of ingenuity. The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto is using the art inherent in all aspects of our citizens’ lives to help make Kumamoto become ‘a city of choice’ as alluring as the artworks it produces.

AGENDAS MUNDI LVIII – MUSEOS EN COSTA DE MARFIL - · en ARTE, CULTURA, MUSEO,OPINIÓN, RELATO, VIAJES. ·

Museus e Paisagens Culturais. --- Cultural museums and Landscapes

A relação entre museus e paisagens culturais vem nortear as discussões

Cultural museums and Landscapes

The relationship between museums and cultural landscapes has guided discussions
the 14th National Week of Museums. Proposed by the International Council
Museums (ICOM) for the annual May 18 (International Day
Museums) 2016 and the 29th ICOM General Conference (to be
held in Milan), this issue reinforces the role of sociocultural
museum institutions. When asked to open their doors to their
external context, it emphasizes the need for the enhancement of
cultures and landscape diversity of the country, which has a mosaic
of cultural goods.

Each region of Brazil consists of specific landscapes, many
sometimes identifiable by means of the relationship between
different social groups and territory. This occurs, e.g.
with riverside communities and traditional naval contexts; or
with country people, who make their living Caatinga; or by modes
traditional life of the Cerrado peoples, formed by ethnic groups
indigenous, quilombolas, family farmers, and so on.
They are very connected to the people and landscapes dynamics
nature, and which often have strong ties of belonging
locations by passing on cultural traditions generation after
generation.

From this perspective, certain urban contexts or even
specific locations in cosmopolitan cities can also be
worked as cultural landscapes. These areas are home to people
with different cultural backgrounds and bring multiple influences
in terms of architecture, cuisine, customs, dress, speak,
arts and others.

The 14th National Week of Museums symbolizes an invitation to the
territory to be understood or reframed as a cultural space
vital communities. The Brazilian socio-cultural diversity is
builds and rebuilds every day, being present in
museological institutions as spaces for communication, knowledge,
research and improvement of cultural practices. In addition to the
preservation memory, museums have a role in
qualification of environments, whether towns, cities, or any
local importing the population regarding their identities and
preservation of their heritage. From this viewpoint, museums take on a
strategic role in local development, to build citizenship
and as a facilitator for cultural and economic opportunities.

With the understanding that the external spaces at the same time
memory seats and mirrors, you can creatively
designing several actions in the communities. From this perspective, the
2016 Museum Week is a good opportunity for museums
strengthen ties and activities with their cultural landscapes.

The Museum of Natural History, Wroclaw University -- Museu de História Natural da Universidade de Wroclaw

The Museum of Natural History, Wroclaw University, came into existence through a fusion of the former zoological and botanical museums and herbarium, i.e. institutions which originally functioned independently within the University or as branches of its institutes. The Zoological Museum came into being in 1814, soon after the establishment of the secular University of Wroc3aw, which was then German (1811). It was founded through the care of Prof. Johann Ludwig Christian Gravenhorst and initially housed in the main edifice of the University at Plac Uniwersytecki. Since the very beginning the collections gathered here were for the purpose of science, education and exhibitions open to the public.

Among the most meritorious scientists, whose collections have been preserved until today and used mainly for scientific purpose, (e.g. descriptive types), were professors Adolph Eduard Grube, Carl Chun, Willy Kükenthal, Ferdynand Pax junior. In 1904 the collections, supervised by W. Kükenthal, were transferred to the current building, erected specially for the Museum.

During World War II, when Wroclaw was besieged (Festung Breslau), the building was bombed. Its whole wing having collapsed and the exhibitions, except the Skeletal Hall, got totally ruined, like the rooms intended for didactic purposes. Ca. 50% of the scientific collections survived the war, after which the Museum was taken over by the Polish University authorities. The collections preserved were safeguarded in the charge of Prof. Kazimierz Sembrat and the first curator Doc. Jan Kinel as well as Doc. Zofia Kozikowska (all from Lvov). The building was renovated, partly reconstructed and the collections secured. The modernization of the building, rearrangement of the collections and organization of the first exhibitions were supervised by Prof. Wladyslaw Rydzewski, the present patron of the Museum. In 1974, on the initiative of Prof. Rydzewski within the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Wrocław University, an institute was distinguished. Due to its profile, the new institution incorporated both zoological and botanical collections.

The botanical collection, created in 1821 on the initiative of Ludolph Christian Treviranus was initially a herbarium at the Botanical Garden. Later, through the efforts of Prof. Heinrich Robert Goeppert, the Botanical Museum was established. Other people of merit include Prof. Carl Adolf Jerzy Lauterbach, who bequeathed to these institutions his huge herbarium collected during an expedition to Melanesia and New Guinea. Another distinguished person was Prof. Ferdynand Pax senior.

During World War II ca. 60% of the botanical collection sustained heavy damage, and all what was saved at different places was again consolidated into one herbarium and secured in the reconstructed building at Kanonia street. Also "Herbarium Silesiacum", which before the war belonged to the society Schlesische Gesellschaft für Vaterländische Kultur, was incorporated to the botanical collection. The cataloguing and preservation activities as well as the new arrangement were initiated by Prof. Krzysztof Rostanski, the most meritorious person in the post-war history of this collection.

Cultura e cozinha brasileira: - O ofício das quitandeiras - The quitandeira’s craft: tradition and cultural heritage of Minas Gerais, Brazil - Chef Juliana Bonomo

The word quitanda, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is used to denote the set of homemade pastries, such as cakes, cookies, donuts and scones. Quitandeiras, then, are the women who make and sell handcraftedpastries. In this article, we try to understand the tradition of quitandeira’s craft of Minas Gerais, as well as bring up and justify the arguments to classify it as an intangible cultural heritage.

The recipes for quitandas began to develop in the early nineteenth century in rural and family atmosphere. Through the knowledge passed from generation to generation, it is a tradition that continues to these days. Transcending a memory that is familiar, the quitandeira’s craft has been incorporated into the debates on collective memory and identity of the inhabitants of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In Minas Gerais, Brazil, from the eighteenth century, the term was used to designate greengrocer black vendeiras, also called black board, and sold food on the streets. Of African origin, more specifically, the Kimbundu, spoken language in the north of Angola, the grocery word, would be a Kitanda derivative, which means board where they are exposed foodstuffs on sale at fairs, including vegetables. In Africa, the word also came to designate their own fairs. In Brazil, she won the meaning of small shops whose products are exhibited in the stands or This feminine practice of African origin, had been extended in the colonies, but it was taking on different local characteristics, as in the case of Minas Gerais, where board black flocked to the areas of mining exploration (Paiva, 2001 Figueiredo, 1993; 1997). During the nineteenth century, with the depletion of mines cycle, the black greengrocers, slaves or blinders were disappearing as a social category, but the term greengrocer he remained, although strongly reframed. Thus, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, the term was devoted to the homemade preparation of pastry, associated with the snack, the snack and coffee, as defined by the essayist Eduardo Frieiro (1982), "grocery store, let us not forget, it is the homemade pastries, Cookie, the bread, the thread, the sequilho, the cake "(...). Therefore, greengrocers, in the current design, are women who make and sell greengrocers. Marked by the oral transmission of knowledge, the craft is passed between the women of the family and is considered an inheritance, a memory of family ancestors.
Recently, in Minas Gerais, the stallholders are gaining more prominence in the gastronomic festivals promoted in the state, such as the city of Congonhas, which promotes Quitanda Festival for 14 years. Next to that, we see a growing interest from the government in encouraging the trade of greengrocers and promote this activity as a cultural asset. Although it has not yet been recorded as intangible cultural heritage, we can say that recent patrimonialization policies identified in the grocery store and the grocer figure, symbols of Minas Gerais regional identity. In this context of patrimony, there is a growing interest in social memory of this practice.
Rev. History Helikon, Curitiba, v.2, n.4, p.32-46, 2nd semester / 2015.
Amid these observations came the idea of this research, whose main purpose is to raise and justify the arguments required to define the office of the stallholders as intangible cultural heritage and its making as entered in the culinary tradition of Minas Gerais. To this end, in addition to a literature review on the origin of greengrocers, we use interviews of field research conducted between the years 2012 and 2014, when we try to limit the memories of women who exercise the office of greengrocers. Using the technique of semi-structured interview, the survey was conducted in the cities of Ouro Preto, Congonhas, Entre Rios de Minas and São Brás do Suaçuí.
Altogether, we interviewed eighteen greengrocers and conducted participatory research in festivals promoted by local governments.
So, hopefully, over the analysis proposed by this work, drawing attention to the craft of Minas Gerais greengrocers in discussions that are part of the contact between the gastronomy, history and social memory. With this research, we try to record the voice, the thought and the history of the women who helped shape the mining cuisine. In doing so, we believe it was possible to achieve a memory that transcends the familiar environment and becomes part of the discussions on the cultural heritage of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
