A large-scale exhibition devoted to Auguste Borget is one of the 2016 edition of the highlights of the Festival "Le French May". The Macao Museum of Art will bring together for the first time in Chinese territory, more than 100 works on loan from museums and private collectors of the painter who made known to Western China through its realistic trait.
The exhibition "Auguste Borget: A Painter in the south coast of China" will meet for the first time in the territory more than a hundred works of the French artist, from private collections and French, British museums, Hong Kong and Macao.
The show is one of the programming highlights for Macao Arts Festival "Le French May", which this year takes place from 1 May to 30 June. The program for Macau and Hong Kong was presented yesterday at a press conference.
The exhibition is being prepared since 2012, the Macao Museum of Art and the local representation of the Alliance Française. The idea of holding the event started, however, the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Guilherme Ung Vai Meng, who is also a painter and a great admirer of Borget explained to PERIOD Éric Sautedé, vice chairman of the executive committee of the Alliance Française de Macau, an organization that co-organizes the event.
"We have some Borget work on the Macau Museum of Art and the Museum of Macau, drawings, sketches, there is a small collection in the territory and the idea was: we have this collection, Borget was a great relief painter. For France it was as important as George Chinnery went to the British, despite not having been so long in Macau as Chinnery, who spent more than 30 years in China. Borget was 10 months, but spent all his time to painting. He spent four years traveling the world, was actually a travel painter, and his stay in Macau was very important in the way he portrayed the day-to-day, "explained Éric Sautedé.
Borget, born in 1808 and died in 1877, reached the South China coast in 1838, spent several months traveling in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macau, staying most of the time in the territory. On returning to France in 1840, he painted the Temple of A-Ma in a work known as "View of the Great Chinese Temple", presented at the Paris Salon and was acquired by the French king, Louis-Philippe.
"This huge painting has never been shown here," Sautedé said, adding that the works come from institutions such as the Sèvres Museum, the Museum Châteauroux, the Departmental Archives de l'Indre, the Museu de l'Hospice Saint-Roch d ' Issoudun, the Museum of Bourges, Martyn Gregory gallery in London and also of British private collectors, Hong Kong and Macao. This shows "will definitely be in decades, the largest exhibition of Borget in China," explained Sautedé.
In the days before photography, Borget stood out as an artist able to recreate very realistic scenarios. When PERIOD Guilherme Ung Vai Meng, explained that "in Europe, Borget is perhaps even greater than Chinnery, he painted many sketches, Europeans knew Macau, Hong Kong, Guangzhou through his work. In addition to drawing made reproduction prints, watercolor and oil. Always said that Macao is special, is not Hong Kong, not Guangzhou, Macau, which is a city that mixes one side of the temple, the other church. His drawings can show these true Macao images before photography. This display can show Macau as it was, "said the president of IC, for whom the painter when drawing shows more emotion and more sensitivity than is visible in the photograph.
"Le French May", organized since 1993, is a festival that promotes the art and French culture in Macao and Hong Kong, offering every year more than a hundred events from exhibitions, ballets, film, music and gastronomy. Programming in Macau will open with a recital of Michel Dalberto, May 2, at the Military Club.
Macau will also be able to see the sculpture "Little Dancer of 14 Years" by Edgar Degas, one of 74 bronze pieces that will be on display at the MGM Art Space, from 29 April to 20 November.
Another highlight is the display on the Galaxy cinemas eight French productions. The film "April and the Extraordinary World" brings to the territory director Christian Desmares and art director Luciano LEPINAY on 11 May.
In Hong Kong, the programming is even more rich and extensive. In addition to numerous concerts, ballets and film, the focus is on the Claude Monet exhibition, founder of French Impressionism, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, from 4 May to 11 July.
