Enredo 1
O narrador conta a história de Macabéa, jovem alagoana de 19 anos que vive no Rio de Janeiro. Órfã, mal se lembrava dos pais, que morreram quando ela era ainda criança. Foi criada por uma tia muito religiosa e moralista, cheia de superstições e tabus, os quais ela passou para a sobrinha.
Essa tia também tinha certo prazer mórbido em castigar Macabéa com cascudos na cabeça, muitas vezes sem motivo, além de privá-la de sua única paixão: a goiabada com queijo na sobremesa. Assim, depois de uma infância miserável, sem conforto nem amor, sem ter tido amigos nem animais de estimação, Macabéa vai para a cidade grande com a tia.
Apesar de ter estudado pouco e não saber escrever direito, Macabéa faz um curso de datilografia e consegue um emprego, no qual recebe menos que o salário mínimo. Após a morte da tia, deixa de ir à igreja e passa a repartir um quarto de pensão com quatro balconistas de uma loja popular.
Macabéa cheirava mal, pois raramente tomava banho. À noite, não dormia direito por causa da tosse persistente, da azia — em virtude do café frio que tomava antes de se deitar — e da fome, que ela disfarçava comendo pedacinhos de papel.
A moça tinha hábitos e manias que aliviavam um pouco a solidão e o vazio de sua existência. Entretinha-se ouvindo a Rádio Relógio num aparelho emprestado de uma das colegas. Essa emissora informava a hora certa, transmitia cultura inútil e propaganda, sem nenhuma música. A garota colecionava também anúncios de jornais e revistas, que colava num álbum. Certa vez, cobiçou um creme cosmético, que preferia comer em vez de passar na pele.
Era muito magra e pálida, pois não se alimentava direito. Basicamente vivia de cachorro-quente com Coca-Cola, que comia na hora do almoço, em pé, no balcão de uma lanchonete ou no escritório em que trabalhava. Não sabia o que era uma refeição quente. Seus luxos consistiam em pintar de vermelho as unhas, que roía depois, comprar uma rosa e, quando recebia o salário, ir ao cinema, o que a fazia desejar ser estrela de cinema, como Marilyn Monroe, seu grande sonho.
Certo dia, o chefe de Macabéa, Raimundo, cansado do péssimo trabalho que ela executava, com textos datilografados cheios de erros de ortografia e marcas de gordura, resolve despedi-la. A reação da garota, de se desculpar pelo aborrecimento causado, acaba desarmando Raimundo, que decide mantê-la por mais um tempo.
Num dia 7 de maio, Macabéa mente dizendo que arrancaria um dente e falta ao trabalho para poder aproveitar a liberdade da solidão e fazer algo diferente. Assim que as colegas saem para trabalhar, ela coloca uma música alta, dança, toma café solúvel e até mesmo se dá ao luxo de se entediar. É nesse dia que conhece Olímpico de Jesus, único namorado que teve.
Não foi um namoro convencional. Olímpico também havia migrado do Nordeste, onde matara um homem, fugindo para o Rio de Janeiro. Conseguira emprego numa metalúrgica, o que dá delírios de grandeza em Macabéa. Afinal, ambos tinham profissão: ela era datilógrafa e ele, metalúrgico.
Mau-caráter e ambicioso, Olímpico morava de favor no trabalho, roubava os colegas e almejava um dia ser deputado. O passeio dos namorados era sempre seguido de chuvas e de programas gratuitos, como sentar-se em bancos de praça para conversar. Nessas ocasiões, Olímpico se irritava com as perguntas que Macabéa fazia, o que a levava constantemente a se desculpar, pois não queria perdê-lo, apesar de seus maus-tratos.
Certo dia, admitindo que ela nunca lhe dava despesa, Olímpico decide pagar um cafezinho para Macabéa no bar da esquina. Avisa, porém, que se o café com leite fosse mais caro, ela pagaria a diferença. Macabéa, emocionada com a "bondade" do namorado, acaba enchendo o copo de açúcar para aproveitar, ficando enjoada depois. Em um passeio ao zoológico, Macabéa fica com tanto medo do rinoceronte que urina na roupa e tenta disfarçar para não desagradar ao namorado. Um dia, vendo que só o chefe e sua colega de escritório, Glória, recebiam telefonemas, Macabéa dá uma ficha telefônica para que Olímpico ligue para ela. Ele se recusa, dizendo que não queria ouvir as "bobagens" dela.
Até que, após conhecer Glória, Olímpico decide romper com Macabéa para ficar com a sua amiga. O rapaz considera a troca um progresso, já que elas eram opostas: Glória era loira (oxigenada), cheia de corpo, morava numa casa confortável, tinha três refeições por dia e, o mais importante, seu pai era açougueiro, profissão ambicionada por Olímpico.
Após esse episódio, Macabéa vai ao médico e descobre que tem tuberculose, mas não entende muito bem a gravidade da doença. Sente-se bem só por ter ido ao consultório e não acha necessário comprar o medicamento receitado. Com dor na consciência por ter roubado o namorado de Macabéa, Glória a convida para lanchar em sua casa. Macabéa, mais uma vez, aproveita a oportunidade e come demais. Apesar de passar mal, não vomita para não desperdiçar o luxo do chocolate, mas sente remorsos por ter roubado uma rosquinha.
Finalmente, aconselhada por Glória, Macabéa vai até uma cartomante para saber de sua sorte. Lá, é recebida pela própria, Madama Carlota, que impressiona a pobre moça pelo "requinte" de sua residência, repleta de plástico, e pela amabilidade afetada com que a trata. Após Madama Carlota contar sobre sua vida como prostituta e cafetina, lê as cartas para Macabéa, que, emocionada, pela primeira vez vislumbra um futuro e se permite ter esperança. Afinal, iria se casar com um estrangeiro rico, que daria todo o amor de que ela precisava.
Inebriada com as previsões da cartomante, Macabéa atravessa a rua sem olhar e é atropelada por uma Mercedes-Benz. Caída na calçada e sangrando, seu fim é testemunhado por inúmeros espectadores que se aglomeram em torno dela, sem que nenhum ofereça socorro. Por fim, a garota tosse sangue e morre. Havia chegado a hora da estrela.
Enredo 2
Começa quando o narrador, andando pela rua, capta o olhar de desespero de uma jovem nordestina no meio da multidão. A partir daí, nasce Macabéa, que representa a miséria inerente ao autor e a todas as pessoas. Em uma relação de amor e ódio, Rodrigo S.M. narra a vida dessa moça como tentativa de se livrar da sensação de mal-estar que ela representa e que o contagiava, ao mesmo tempo em que se apieda e se revolta, inclusive se sentindo culpado por viver num padrão mais elevado que a maioria da população marginalizada.
Dessa forma, intima o leitor a também se colocar no lugar do outro para experimentar essa miséria e perceber que, no fundo, ela faz parte de todos nós. Por isso, não basta denunciar as mazelas sociais, como a fase anterior do modernismo pregava, mas induzir o leitor a uma epifania, uma revelação, ainda que despertada pela náusea, como nesse caso.

Nessa parte, Rodrigo S.M. discute a limitação da literatura diante da busca existencial. Também ironicamente condena os autores de estilo pretensamente original, que abusam de modismos, de adornos que descaracterizam o poder das palavras, bem como a obsessão pelo rigor formal, pela ortografia impecável.
Assim, há na obra diversos recursos metalinguísticos. Essas três narrativas se interligam, não sendo possível separá-las, pois o livro nem mesmo tem divisão por capítulos.

Sobre Clarice Lispector
Clarice Lispector nasceu em 10 de dezembro de 1920 em Tchetchelnik, Ucrânia. Quando tinha cerca de dois meses de idade, seus pais migraram para o Brasil, terra que considerava como sua verdadeira pátria. Em 1924, a família mudou-se para o Recife, onde iniciou seus estudos. Por volta dos oito anos, Clarice perdeu sua mãe. Três anos depois, a família muda-se para o Rio de Janeiro.
Ingressa em 1939 na Faculdade de Direito, e publica no ano seguinte seu primeiro conto, Triunfo, em uma revista. Forma-se em 1943 e casa-se no mesmo ano com o diplomata Maury Gurgel Valente, com quem teve dois filhos. Durante seus anos de casada, mora em diversos países pela Europa e nos Estados Unidos.
Em 1944, publica seu primeiro romance, Perto do coração selvagem, vindo a ganhar o Prêmio Graça Aranha, da Academia Brasileira de Letras, no ano seguinte. Separa-se de seu marido em 1959 e volta para o Rio de Janeiro com seus dois filhos. No ano seguinte, publica seu primeiro livro de contos, Laços de família.
Em 1967, um cigarro provoca um grande incêndio em sua casa e Clarice fica gravemente ferida, correndo risco inclusive de ter sua mão direita amputada. Porém, após se recuperar, continua com sua carreira literária publicando diversos livros.
Publica em 1977 seu último livro, A hora da estrela, vindo a ser internada pouco tempo depois com câncer. A escritora vem a falecer no dia 9 de dezembro do mesmo ano, véspera de seu aniversário de 57 anos.
