A museum of women warriors, in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov.

A museum of women warriors, in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov.

#SaveGenderMuseum is a project in which a collection of more than three thousand objects in Kharkov (Ukraine) is maintained thanks to Spanish sponsors.

“Tatiana is a born warrior!” says María. “María is a GREAT WOMAN who makes HEROIC efforts,” writes Tatiana in capital letters.

The lives of María Sánchez (Guadalajara, 1985) and Tatiana Isaeva (Karków, 1959) intersected thanks to the Gender Museum in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov, where Sánchez arrived through a European volunteer program.

She is an artist and cultural manager and at that time she was preparing her master's thesis. As she was not satisfied with herself and was going through a difficult time, she sought change and found it in Ukraine, a country she arrived in April 2014, two months after Black Thursday – which was considered the bloodiest day of the conflict. between pro-Russians and pro-Europeans.

She was looking for a place where the situation was difficult, where she did not know the language to start from scratch and develop one of the practical examples of her thesis, which is a field study of artistic projects in peripheral, marginal and without resources contexts.

After several months working at the municipal gallery and at a festival, it was time to carry out another of the scheduled tasks: closing the museum that Isaeva ran.

The Spanish volunteer's mission was to pack more than 3,000 objects that make up the only museum of its kind in Ukraine and Eastern Europe: the blueprint for the artist Pimienta Sánchez – as her role as a cultural agitator is known on social media.

Sánchez met with Isaeva to show him the state of the collection. When the director opened the door to the place where the museum is, everything was dark, there was no light.

Sánchez took her cell phone from her purse, turned on her flashlight and started illuminating walls, tables, objects... she felt a shock of reality: she had more resources than the museum. They couldn't pay the electricity bill. The director, seeing her so interested, was kind enough to light a small lamp, an economic effort for her.

They met again the next morning, with natural light. Sánchez watched the missiles and letters hanging from the ceiling, the ones that women sent to their husbands during one of the last wars the country went through; a dressing table covered with a black cloak, a symbol of the fact that at the time of the conflict there was no time to devote to physical care, when this aspect of the Ukrainian woman's life is essential; posters, photographs and even a typewriter from the Soviet era, but with the keyboard in Ukrainian, it is a symbol of freedom, it belonged to a woman who could write in her language.

Sánchez realized that she needed time. But not to end the museum, but to find a way to move it forward and help this woman who built it and fought for it.

The museum was her. She is the one who receives the calls from those who want to visit him and, no matter where in the city the person is, he will pick him up to show him the museum.

The more than five hundred visits between 2013 and 2014 translate into 500 calls to Isaeva for her to open the doors and show the collection.

Any comparison with “a conventional museum” is like comparing planet orbits of galaxies that are millions of light years away.

She financed it until she decided to dedicate that part of her small pension to those who marched to the front.

It was she who decided that it was necessary to preserve, tell and perpetuate the history of women.

A gender museum in a country where the term doesn't even exist, where one of the goals of women when they enroll in university is to find a husband.

Within a week, Sánchez showed Isaeva a campaign and a marketing plan.

The #SaveGenderMuseum was born and Isaeva enthusiastically confirms that in this way they are still alive.

I started with the end, with the gift shop,” explains Sánchez.

She created a logo, a t-shirt, posted it on the museum's website for anyone who wanted to download it and publicize the project.

She did the math and with 100 euros a month they could keep renting the space.

In reality they were around 97, 98 euros, but they rounded it up and with the rest they managed to change the light bulbs and have notebooks! She funded the first month, January 2015. Her maternal grandparents, the second.

And little by little the network expanded: it receives messages from anywhere in the world; see unknown people downloading the logo and putting it on their profile on social networks; an argentine artist sent 100 euros to collaborate in one of the next months.

The girls who are part of 7h Coop, a Galician cooperative whose objective is to promote artistic creation, got to know the idea and adopted it in March.

“It's an honest project, we felt it was close to us”, comments Clara Rodríguez, a member of 7H.

“We wonder how much it costs to save a museum and how much is needed...”.

The month of April was the responsibility of Nokton Magazine, a magazine that writes about courageous cultural initiatives, so that in Sánchez’s organized schedule the sponsors of each month appear one by one and there are only three left to pay for the entire year of 2016.

What she offers in return is the dissemination of the work of the sponsors each month. Isaeva says they are still alive thanks to the efforts of the Spaniards who participate.

Sánchez has a new objective: to link the Ukrainian community living in Spain with this museum in his country. A country that, even without being in the headlines, remains immersed in a conflict. And yet women like Tatiana Isaeva – and her daughter – do not let their cultural legacy fade away and be destroyed like a statue of Lenin.

--- One of the most beautiful stories of Carnival of São Paulo, will plot in 2017

Assim nascia a Lavapés.

One of the most beautiful stories of Carnival of São Paulo, will plot in 2017

In February 2017 the oldest samba school in activity in the city of São Paulo, Lavapés, full eighty years of history.

The special day, not only for the body but for the popular São Paulo culture, will be held in the form of plot Carnival next year with the theme "Eight decades of samba, my Lavapés, Land pride of drizzle", and development the carnivalesque Horace Rabaça Son. Read the synopsis in full.

Wash feet. Photo: Collection

The samba the world is celebrating. The black heralds evoke the arrival of what is the oldest school in activity of São Paulo: the Recreational Society Charitable School of Samba Lavapés. It started with the dedication of Deolinda Mother, but according to numerous godchildren was known as "Godmother Eunice."

Daughter of slaves, was born on October 14, 1909 in Piracicaba been living in São Paulo with twelve. The musical notes jongo, rural samba and drumming were the basis of their training so that future to become one of the São Paulo carnival icon. In the capital, lived in Tamandaré Street, residing later in the glory streets, Galvão Bueno and Barão de Iguape (where it was installed the court of the club). I had as fellow Italian Chico Pinga, a master cavaquinhista who also helped found the Lavapés. The "Samba Black Queen" passed away in 1995 leaving a huge legacy ...

A Rio inspiration

Godmother Eunice and Chico Pinga met in Pirapora Party, a tradition involving pilgrimages, sambas and drums in various parts of the state to the city of Pirapora do Bom Jesus. For several years Mrs. Eunice kept the custom of taking the school members and his family the famous festival celebrated on August 06, which revolves around the image that was found in the region in 1725, approximately the banks of the Tiete River, and now considered miraculous. In the state capital was part of a carnival block Glicerio, in the 1930s, called "Baianas Paulistas" which lasted about three years, until, in 1936, the couple was to spend some time with family in Rio de Janeiro when watched the Carnival of Praça Onze.

Delighted with the parade of red and white samba school "Let Malhar" she then met some drummers and 20 men in the neighborhood to parade dressed in Bahia. Thus was born the Lavapés. Dona Eunice chose the colors red and white, as were the school she said have liked to see in Rio de Janeiro and the symbol adopted for the school was a Bahian figure for which he had great admiration. It would represent the traditional wing carnival and large matrons of terreiros groups from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

The dream turned school come true ...

The school was considered one of the strongest in its heyday and it was attended by several samba dancers that later would found and participate in other city schools. Among them, Carlão the Peruche (founder of States Peruche in 1956), Silval Empire (founder of Cambuci Empire in 1963), Chiclé and Thadeu Master (of the Go-Go), the broadcasters Moraes Sarmento and Evaristo de Carvalho , Lagrila Master and the multi-artist Germano Mathias. Lavapés went through the virtually all spaces dedicated to carnival parades since its founding in 1937. Cathedral Square, Anhangabaú Valley, Saint John Avenue Tiradentes and to the Sambadrome.

At the end of the 30s and 40s, participated in contests organized by traders and radio stations in different parts of the city, is considered the greatest champion of this period. In the 50's, there was the unification of the carnival associations disputes in Cathedral Square, and between schools and cords, the Lavapés was tetracampeã (1950-1953) and also won the championship in 1956.

Today the school is run by Rosemeire Marcondes, granddaughter of Honour Eunice, and even away from the Sambadrome spotlight is respected and admired by all, considered the school of heart by the true samba of São Paulo carnival. The Lavapés have true warriors who honor their flag. We end with a memorable phrase beloved founder godmother: "Lavapés had a beginning, but will have no end."

Carnival 2016

This year Lavapés paraded by Group 3 UESP with the theme: "African Dance" and got the sixth place in the final standings.

Catedral de São Basílio completa 455 anos. --- St. Basil's Cathedral full 455 years.

2. A catedral simboliza a Cidade Celestial

St. Basil's Cathedral full 455 years.

One of the most visited and photographed sights of Moscow, the Cathedral of St. Basil, celebrates its 455 anniversary on Tuesday (12).

Cathedral survived different historical periods and regimes Photo: Panthermedia / Vostock-photo

1. Its official name is the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Theotokos

It was built between 1555 and 1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his victory over the Khanate of Kazan, which took place on the holiday of Intercession of the Holy Virgin.

The church was then known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Moat because of its location: until 1813, the Kremlin, from the side of Red Square, was protected by a moat.

Four of the eight Cathedral chapels were named in reference to religious dates that coincided with major events in the campaign in Kazan. There is also given the name of the Trinity, as it is believed that in the Middle Ages there was a Trinity Church there.

2. The cathedral symbolizes Heavenly City

According to one theory, the cathedral symbolizes heavenly Jerusalem, or in other words, the Kingdom of God, whose walls are decorated with precious stones. Yet another theory says that its architects have tried to replicate the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae in Constantinople, the scene of the Intercession of miracle when the Blessed Virgin appeared to Christians praying for protection against a Saracen army and covered the whole Christian world with his robe .

3. There are nine churches in one

At first the basement of the future cathedral served as a basis for nine small churches built one after the other and connected by galleries and passages. Interestingly, in the 16th century, the basement was also used to protect the church coffers and the economies of richer city dwellers.

The exterior of the cathedral was made to look like masonry, but each time has left its trace in the architecture of this milestone. After a fire in 1595, the churches were decorated with domes with onion aspect, which acquired their vivid today only in the 18th century Later on in 1817 during a renovation of the Red Square, the architect Joseph Bove reinforced wall cathedral contention with stone and erected a fence of cast iron.

4. The middle name of the cathedral comes from a blessed Muscovite

The second name of the cathedral - in honor of Basil the Blessed - has a reason to exist. Basil Moscow, a follower of Christ, he could see the future and predicted the fire of 1547, in which nearly a third of Moscow was destroyed. Throughout his life, Basil suffered privations, was homeless and had no clothes or shoes, whatever the weather. When he died, the Metropolitan of Moscow Macarius celebrated his funeral, and Ivan himself the Terrible carried the coffin along with other boyars.

After Basil be canonized in 1588, one tenth church was added to the cathedral, where his relics were transferred, and the whole was named in honor of the new saint.

5. Cathedral architects were blinded after the works

There are several theories about those responsible for the cathedral project. The most widely accepted is that the cathedral was designed by the architects Barma and Postnik. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible ordered the architects were blinded after concluding the work of the Cathedral so that they could not replicate it or build another even more beautiful. However, it is unlikely to be more than a legend, since later Postnik was involved in the construction of the Cathedral of the Annunciation, and the walls and towers of the Kazan Kremlin.

There is also another theory that the Intercession Cathedral may have been built by an Italian architect who was working in the Moscow Kremlin.

6. The French wanted to blow up the cathedral, and the communist authorities, demolish it

Situated right in the heart of Moscow, the temple was in danger more than once. In 1812, when the French troops were retreating, they wanted to blow up the Cathedral of St. Basil, but did not have time to do it. In the late 1920s, the Soviet authorities decided to put down the cathedral, after all, were not very interested in having a "house of worship" in the city center. The cathedral was saved by the architect and restorer Pyotr Baranovsky, who came to send a telegram to Stalin asking to halt the plans. As a result, the Intercession Cathedral was not demolished, but Baranovsky was subject to reprisals for 'anti-Soviet activity'.

7. Only one original bell survived

The cathedral bell tower remains in operation. However, counting the multitude of bells that the cathedral has had since it was built in the 16th century, only one survived to the present day. In 1929, the Soviet authorities demanded that the bronze bells were melted down and, according to the sexton Alexei Konovalov, is a miracle that one of the bells has been preserved - including the sound it produces.

8. Today is a world heritage site

The Cathedral of the Intercession was one of the first to take possession of the young Soviet state. In 1923, it was converted into a museum of history and architecture, and six years later became a branch of the State Historical Museum. In the early 1990s, the cathedral, including the chapel of Basil the Blessed, returned to be used for religious purposes. At the same time, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
