--- Brazil creates bamboo bike becomes part of the Danish Design Museum.

Brazil creates bamboo bike becomes part of the Danish Design Museum.

In a country where more pedals in the world, Denmark, a Brazilian is drawing attention to a bicycle that breaks new ground because of the material it is made of: bamboo. The Danish Design Museum, which is the largest of its kind in Scandinavia, just include in its permanent collection a bicycle made of bamboo imported from Brazil which was created and produced by Rio Flavio Deslandes.

Margareth Marmori, correspondent for RFI in Copenhagen

The bicycle, called Comfort Bamboo, was chosen because of its novel design and use a renewable raw material, unlike metals used in conventional models. The inclusion of Bamboo Comfort in the museum's collection is a recognition of the work that Flávio began almost 20 years ago, while living in Brazil and studied Industrial Design at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

In Rio de Janeiro city, he participated in a research project that sought to explore the bamboo advantages in industrial production. In Denmark, where he has lived for 15 years, Flávio benefited from state support for research in industrial design to continue your project.

"Here in Denmark we usually have access to cutting edge technologies. In Brazil, I believe it is a bit more difficult. Denmark invests heavily in research. Have workshops that are funded by the Ministry of Culture and you have easier access to these new technologies in relation to Brazil, "admits the designer.

Country favorable to cycling

disclosure
Flavio also found in Denmark an extremely favorable to cycling environment. The capital, Copenhagen, where he lives, is considered the best city in the world to cycling and cycling is one of the main population means of transport. But there are many Danes who are frightened by the drawn bamboo models and manufactured by Flávio.

"They are always surprised because they think of bamboo just as a decorative plant that they have in the corner of the house. First they ask if it is strong enough, but then they see me riding the bike they change the question wondering if it will last or whether it will break after a few years. An interesting thing with the bike is that bamboo is biodegradable and this confuses some people because all the products we use on a daily basis are made to last, "says the Brazilian.

In Flávio opinion, it might be time for people to move to adopt the idea of biodegradable products and abandon the idea that they should last many years.

"I think that every product has its life. We spent time developing a product and thinking about this product to last a lifetime just that after a while, after 10 years, 20 years, in fact, you do not want more than one product exists and then it becomes a waste. You do not know what to do with that product. So if you have a bamboo bike, for example, you might think that it will last 10 years or 20 years and after this time it will degrade and return to the land, you will not have to deal with waste, I think it's an interesting idea, "he said.

Industrial production is not simple

Using bamboo in industrial large-scale production is not a simple task. But Flavius believes that new technologies will contribute to these obstacles are overcome in a few years.

"The big challenge is bamboo industrial production on a large scale because today the techniques we use are very handmade, are complicated, require a very great attention. What is happening today, for example, it is the 3D printer, which is a new technology that is growing very fast and maybe it would be an interesting way to be used with the bamboo. Perhaps in the future we can print, use this 3D printer to make the connections entres bamboos, for example, "predicts Flávio.

One of the problems for the large-scale production with bamboo is the joints that connect the pipes that form the frame and connect to other parts of the bike. The metal parts are used for joining pipes used in the conventional bicycles can be all the same because conventional pipes are all equal. But the bamboo tubes are very varied. The 3D printing can facilitate the manufacture of tailored pieces, adapted to the various sizes of bamboo tubes.

--- THE FORMER MORE LIBRARY WORLD in Fez, Morocco, has been restored by two talented Muslim women.
