Arte Sacra: Património português considerado «exemplo para a Europa». --- Sacred Art: Portuguese heritage considered 'example for Europe'

Lisbon, November 11, 2016 (Ecclesia) - The president of Thesauri - the International Association of Museums and Treasures of the Catholic Church, says that "Portugal is an example for Europe in the conservation and enhancement of religious heritage."

Bernard Berthod is in our country, during a congress of his organization that began today in Beja, and praised the national patrimony, considering it "extremely valuable and essential for understanding the history of the Catholic religion and a Europe that was Built, in large part, around the Catholic faith. "

The event promoted by the Association 'Thesauri', which brought to the Alentejo some of the greatest experts in the field of Sacred Art, has as its theme "The Materiality of the Imaterial: Looks at Places and Devotional Objects".

According to the person responsible for this organization, this theme is based on a "concern that all museum conservatives are well aware of", which is how to talk to people about the sacred "in an increasingly secularized world."

"Most of our communities no longer understand the meaning of these objects, because it is the religious practice that lends them value. It is to say that faith, the presence of Christ in the liturgy is not visible, but there are means that make it visible, and these means are works of art. It is necessary to work to assert this spiritual dimension of art, "he said.

Besides the concern with the message, with the way of transmitting sacred art, the religious heritage to the people, the agents of the sector also emphasize the importance of "protecting these objects".

"There is certainly the difficulty of preserving these objects, of fighting also against the theft of parts, which happens in all countries of Europe and the world," stressed Bernard Berthod, who is essential to "sensitize political power" in this matter.

"We must work in this direction, in partnership with the public forces, to show our presence and goodwill, and for bishops, archbishops and episcopal conferences to be interested in their heritage," added the current director of the Museum of Religious Art Fourvière in Lyon, France.

The association 'Thesauri', founded 10 years ago, currently brings together representatives from nations such as Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, England, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Its main asset, Bernard Berthod said, is the "exchange of experiences" that help each participant to "grow" in their reality, to "interrogate" themselves about their context.

This year's congress is like a 'return to origins', since the initial meeting of Thesauri took place precisely in Beja.

For the director of the Department of Historic and Artistic Heritage (DPHA) of the Diocese of Beja, it is an honor to welcome this "European forum par excellence".

"For us heritage is increasingly a guarantee of development. If we look at the numbers and think that it is above all in the field of cultural, religious and natural heritage that tourism has been growing, we understand the need to be more and more infrastructurized and prepared to welcome the large number of visitors that are looking for us " , Stressed José António Falcão.

The organization of the Congress of the Association 'Thesauri', which began today in the church of Our Lady at the Foot of the Cross, is supported by the DPHA of the Diocese of Beja, the local authority and the UNESCO Center for Architecture and Religious Art.

An event that brings to Portugal specialists in Sacred Art as Georges Kazan, from the School of Archeology of Oxford University; Hermann Reidel, of the Association of German Language Museums; Manuel Gracia Rivas, from the Royal Academy of History, Madrid; And Gäel Favier of the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Sorbonne) in Paris.

"Smoking Snakes" at the Brazilian Army Museum in Command of the 5th Military Region - TO THE REGION HEROES OF LAPA. --- "Smoking Snakes" no Museu do exército Brasileiro no Comando da 5ª Região Militar - À REGIÃO HERÓIS DA LAPA.

The Swedish rock band Sabaton, who in the song "Smoking Snakes" tells the true story of three soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in World War II, visited on Thursday (03/11) the Expeditionary Museum and received from the hands of the The Medal Sergeant Max Wolff Filho.

The band, which is touring the country, tells the story of three heroes who did not surrender when they met with a German unit after tearing their group into a combat action.

Brazilian soldiers: Arlindo Lúcio da Silva, Geraldo Rodrigues de Souza and Geraldo Baêta da Cruzlutaram until the end and did not surrender. They were killed by the enemies, who after the combat placed a cross near the tombs of the three with the inscription: Drei Brasilianische helden (three Brazilian heroes). The story is true and documented among the various acts of bravery of the national soldiers in that campaign.

The name of the song "Smoking Snakes" also confirms the idea of homage to the soldiers, since the Brazilian coat that they had on the shoulder was exactly a snake with a pipe in the mouth.

"Smoking Snakes" no Museu do exército Brasileiro no

--- Capinan comments on the National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture (Muncab). In Bahia, Brazil.

A partir do dia 18, o museu realiza o projeto Zumbido no Muncab.

A principal bandeira aqui é o humanismo.

A inteligência, a sensibilidade, a arte, a cultura...

"We have an important collection that is threatened,"

The Bahian poet and composer causes a "buzz" to draw attention to the difficulties faced by the National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture, which struggles to survive

Fourteen years have passed since the creation of the National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture (Muncab) and, amazingly, the space affectionately dubbed a "museum in process" is far from complete. "Immense cultural loss", according to the director of Muncab, José Carlos Capinan, 75, who decided to make a "buzz" to draw attention to the difficulties faced in space.

Persistent, the tropicalist poet and composer comments on problems ranging from flooding and risk to works, to the process of federalization still pending. Also president of the Association of Friends of Afro-Brazilian Culture (Amafro), Capinan reveals artistic and architectural projects for the museum, talks about the project Buzz in the Muncab, which will show Paulinho da Viola, and criticizes the retrogression of the current society. Check it.

Idealized in 2002, the Muncab is going through a process of federalization that has not yet been completed. What foot is that?

The proposal to create the museum arose in 2002, made by the Ministry of Culture, and the idea was to create five federal museums in different states. Among them, there was one dedicated to Afro-Brazilian culture and it was defined that the best place for the implantation of this museum would be Bahia, by its own history, by the strength of Afro-Brazilian culture here. The idea was that the museum had a mixed management - with the participation of the state, the Ministry of Culture and an Oscip (Civil Society Organization of Public Interest) - in order to overcome a problem that was experienced at the time and which continues today . Not only a management problem, but resources that allow us to invest in educational and cultural activities, which is more or less the model we are trying to implement here. That is, the project was planned to be executed in two years, from 2002, and its fundamental part would be federalization, in which, through a decree-law, this museum would turn federal.

What are the obstacles hindering this process?

There have been some administrative disruptions and this has already delayed the work by two years. In 2004, we had the first sponsorship of Caixa Econômica, to register the two buildings, architectural project, museology and complementary projects. We captured through the Rouanet Law, but it was not enough to develop the restoration works. So in 2010, we were still struggling. Then came the creation of an agreement with the National Fund of Culture, in the approximate amount of R $ 10 million. However, installments were suspended in 2011 due to irregularities in the works found by CGU (Federal Comptroller's Office). As a result, we have filed a lawsuit against the contractor and this action is still pending. Work is a very complicated thing, especially a work of ruins. For example, we are experiencing a problem with the rains that continue to flood the museum. We want the release of what is retained to give continuity to these works and to make the adjustment on the roof. We have a very important collection that is threatened. We need to give continuity, because we have 80% of work done on this side of the building and we want to resume the works of the other building, where a library and a cafe will be made.

What causes this impasse?

An immense cultural loss, a historic loss because it does not legitimize the cultural diversity that is one of the greatest riches we have. It is a discrimination, because it does not allow Brazil to know its own origin, its matrices. In the fight against racism, against prejudice and in the struggle for knowledge, people also lose, because they do not have an entity capable of dynamizing this knowledge to overcome ignorance about this important matrix. That is why, at a certain moment, we adopted the nickname 'Museum in Process' and we continue to do educational actions and exhibitions, such as that of Mestre Didi and Benin Is Still Still There - Ancestrality and Contemporaneity (2009), curated by Emanoel Araujo, Who is responsible for choosing this magnificent building - former state treasury. After adopting the 'Museum in Process', we adopted today another motto: Living Museum.

Given what is thought for the Muncab, is there any attempt to energize the environment?

There are many ideas, but they depend on our money. For example, there is a proposal by the architect Paulo Ormindo for the creation of an underground parking lot, which is very important, and there is the signaling proposal indicating where the museum is located. In addition, our calendar provides for two annual temporary exhibitions, allusive dates such as May 13 and November, month of black conscience. We can only do this in November. But I think that the creation of the museum as a legal entity will give us collaborators, technicians, researchers, teachers and museologists to make the institution work. Today, we are working with five people, counting the guards, eight.

What is still foreseen in the Muncab programming?

Our expository script was created to try to cover most of the themes of Afro-Brazilian culture. This is what the script - which has not yet been fully installed - aims to: speak of the black identity, speak of Africa as continent from where all humanity came initially; Talk of the slave trade; Black resistance, quilombos and revolts; Of contributions in cooking; Of religiosity; Of popular festivals; Of sports; And music, which is an exuberance of matrices with samba, semba, maracatu ... We will have a tree of knowledge and we will invite artists every two years to make an installation in this room. We have the idea of the axé garden, with sacred medicinal plants, and let's talk about art too, because we are a historical and artistic museum.

From the 18th, the museum realizes the project Buzz in the Muncab. What is the purpose of the event, which has exhibitions, workshop and show of Paulinho da Viola?

First is to give more visibility to the museum and its problems. Give more visibility to its importance and win more fans to its installation, to overcome this bureaucracy, this lack of consideration. We are priority and overcoming resistance is the main goal. Resume the project, press for the museum to be federalized. This is important for him to actually survive.

Today, the big problem in the manifestations is the lack of content and the individualism without identity, without responsibility. We must be here, in this house of culture, stimulators of freedom of creation, of freedom of expression. Without this, humanism empties itself. The main banner here is humanism. Teaching to do, teaching to be, because we think we are what we do and the better we do, the better we are. This is the proposal of the museum, to be able to help to form a conscience, that allows a contribution with contemporaneity.

Do you agree that this contemporaneity is going backwards?

No doubt. I have an interpretation for this current Brazilian crisis: it is a capitalist crisis above all, that can not guarantee for humankind a system that is good for all. Until the middle of the last century, the issue of blackness, of women, of gender, and of other things was stuck. Since the 1960s, there has been a counterculture, and then, suddenly, several things that have been won are threatened again. All this after a century of Woodstock, Bossa Nova, New Cinema, Modern Art Week, the anti-war movement ... You see the candidate who wins the elections in the United States speaking in a prejudiced way against The woman, the homosexual, the Muslims and against a number of things that make us question whether this will be permanent, or it will be destroyed. This wave of conservatism is very strong and intelligence must be the great weapon again. The intelligence, the sensibility, the art, the culture ... And the museum is just a house in favor of the production of knowledge. We had several programs to work with the community, but how are we going to do it without recourse? Without the museological structure approved? So you have to give a shock, make a "shake" as was Tropicalismo.

Taking advantage of what you've touched on, how do you expect to celebrate Tropicalia's 50th anniversary, next year?

I had no idea that Tropicália would become a movement that is there to be permanently taught ... But it is a way of preserving memories and attitudes. At the time of Tropicalism there was a universal rebellion, and young people were challenged with what was set up, they did not trust people over 30 and even political parties who were rejected as if they were capable of changing the world. So the idea was that music, art, and poetry would transform the world. This is what gives strength to Tropicalism at that moment, because it is basically a cultural, behavioral movement. There arise the great moments of black power, which challenge the aesthetic prejudices, the patterns. All of this is put into play all over the world. The festivals were also very important for this expression, especially the festival, with Domingo in the Park; Joy Joy; And there also appears I'm Crazy For You America. Guitars come in as the musical and poetic aesthetic of that moment. At that time, the Cold War, the arms race, the race for space, all this challenged the tropicalists and I think they responded in a very sensitive way. So, maybe, they are always a source for us to review this path, and in an hour like this where there is a conservative wave, to take new initiatives and to play with the faces.
