Art and About: Charlotte Trounce celebrates the architectural beauty of museums and galleries. --- Arte e Sobre: Charlotte Trounce celebra a beleza arquitetônica de museus e galerias

With her pen and paper in hand, illustrator Charlotte Trounce has journeyed to numerous galleries and museums across the UK to capture the iconic structures and large-scale spaces that house the works of art that the nation has come to treasure. The illustrations have been commissioned by It’s Nice That in partnership with the Art Fund, to celebrate the National Art Pass. The Pass provides free entry to over 240 museums, galleries and historic houses across the UK, as well as 50% off entry to major exhibitions.

Charlotte has created a series of careful and detailed studies, all in her expressive and jovial style. Using the National Art Pass, the illustrator visited Switch House, the new wing of Tate Modern designed by Herzog & de Meuron; Modernist architect Ernő Goldfinger’s Hampstead residence, 2 Willow Road; Charleston, the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury Group; South London Gallery’s recently opened garden, designed by artist Gabriel Orozco; Holkham Hall in Norfolk; and the Art Deco interiors of Eltham Palace, all of which provide a broad overview of how diversely collections are housed in the UK.

“For this brief I wanted to capture both the exterior of buildings as well as some interior spaces and detail. For me, it was most interesting seeing how individual objects or works of art that I would’ve picked out and drawn separately for the first brief, sit within the settings collectively, and how they interact with the space,” explains Charlotte. Having always been interested in architecture and interiors, Charlotte was keen to represent the character of the places she visited, as well as the structural elements. “I wanted to express the mood of the space – whether it was the vastness of Tate Modern or the eclectic interiors at Charleston,” she says.

“Colour was definitely important for me as I felt it would say a lot about the uniqueness of each place as well as the atmosphere on the day of the visit.” This awareness of different shades and tones adds warmth to her black linework and allows Charlotte to differentiate between the different spaces she visited. Through a sumptuous palette of golds, greens, blues and reds, Charlotte also alludes to “how the use of colour has changed throughout history”.

Across the unique atmospheres within the spaces Charlotte visited, the illustrator was able to explore the aesthetic of each building and explore how historical and cultural sites have been re-purposed for showing art. “I wanted to show the contrast between each one. 2 Willow Road and Eltham Palace were both built in the 1930s, but they feel completely different from one another in terms of the design and styling,” explains Charlotte. “I tried to focus on the details I felt best communicated their individuality, whether that was the exterior architecture or the furniture and objects within.” Charlotte employed the same approach to capturing the galleries and museums as she did with the previous brief. “Surprisingly a lot of the same principles of design are found in objects great and small, so I could just focus on the shapes and mark-making as I had done with the first brief,” she says.

The beauty of the places Charlotte visited is in the breadth of architecture on display, which reminds us of the significance in preserving these spaces so they can still be enjoyed rather than simply remembered. “Although there’s something special about seeing works of art in modern gallery settings with white walls, I think it’s really important to also see them in their original spaces where you can really appreciate and understand their history and purpose,” Charlotte says. “Charleston has been beautifully restored and it was amazing to experience a home decorated and filled with objects and works of art created by the community living there. It’s impossible not to feel inspired and in awe of the space.” Having finished her series of drawings, Charlotte says: “I hope to have expressed how beautiful all the spaces are, but really, they can’t compare to how it feels to be there.”

A National Art Pass offers 50% off major exhibitions, plus free entry to hundreds of museums, galleries and historic places across the UK. The really good bit? Funds raised through the pass allow the Art Fund to help museums and galleries buy important works of art for everyone to enjoy.

A parte realmente boa? Today, Spain’s national art museum opened its first solo exhibition devoted to a female artist ever.

197 Years After It Opens, the Prado Museum Gives a Woman a Solo Show.

It took nearly 200 years for Madrid’s Museo del Prado, the national art museum of Spain, to mount its first solo exhibition devoted to a female artist. The Art of Clara Peeters, a one-room exhibition featuring 15 works by the pioneering still life painter of the Dutch Golden Age, opened today; the Prado will celebrate its bicentennial in 2019. As the Art Newspaper‘s Hannah McGivern — who pointed out this very belated first — notes, Peeters is one of only 41 women represented in the museum’s collection — it owns four of the works in the exhibition — compared to its holdings of works by over 5,000 male artists.

A survey of the last 13 years of exhibitions at the Prado confirms what seems like a startling gender bias for a museum operating in the 21st century. While this Peeters exhibition appears to be 197 years in the making, since 2003 the institution has mounted six exhibitions devoted to Francisco Goya, four on El Greco, and three each about Diego Velázquez, Titian, and Picasso (the latter of whom, it’s worth noting, was the museum’s director from 1936 to 1939). In the same period, the Prado’s seven forays into contemporary art have also all been solo shows for men, including Francis Bacon, Cy Twombly, Richard Hamilton, and Thomas Struth.

For comparison’s sake, national museums elsewhere in Europe have done only slightly better. Over the past decade, the Louvre has held exhibitions devoted to several female contemporary artists, including Candida Höfer, Eva Jospin, Monique Frydman, and Michal Rovner; it also mounted a historic show devoted to Princess Marie of Orléans and co-organized the recent Élisabeth-Louise Vigée Le Brun retrospective (though it was hosted off-site during its Paris run). Over the last nine years, the UK’s National Gallery has given two women solo shows: in 2014 it opened a one-room exhibition devoted to Maggi Hambling, and in 2010 it held a Bridget Riley exhibition. Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum has not had a single solo exhibition by a female artist since it reopened three and a half years ago. It did, however, host an exhibition featuring three female artists’ portraits of the Netherlands’ new king.

These depressing figures confirm the Guerrilla Girls’ recent comments on the occasion of their aptly titled show at the Whitechapel Gallery, Is it even worse in Europe? “The numbers are very low, they’re not diverse,” a Guerrilla Girl going by Käthe Kollwitz told ARTnews. “Many museums are trying to play catch up but they have a long way to go because they’re stuck with their collection which they started many years ago and it’s mostly white guys.”

"Culture is not an activity of free time, it is what makes us free all the time."

Luisa Etxenike (San Sebastián, 1957) is a writer of novels and short stories, but also reflects on language, political reality or the future with certain clairvoyance as her frequent articles in the press show. Next June 18 will present a new book in San Sebastián, El arte de la pesca, rewriting the last part of his novel Los Peces negros, a sort of 'collage' of short films in relation to that text, which will carry a sound illustration In charge of the composer Borja de Miguel.

Director of the literary festival A world of writers, member of the Editorial Board of the magazine of culture and thought Grand Place, last Saturday, April 18, participated in the TEDx Medieval Almond event in Vitoria to talk about linguistic ecology: "Like the Amazon jungles, words are also expelled, violated, mistreated and must be taken care of, "he said.

Where does your argument arise about the need for a linguistic ecology in the face of the impoverishment of language?

I call it linguistic ecology, but we could also talk about ecology of thought, about cultural ecology. The reflection comes from the realization of the desertification that advances in certain fields that I consider fundamental, that is the one of the culture, the thought, the art, the intellectual creation. And that has to do with an impoverishment of language. The relationship with language is the stellar relationship of our lives and losing that hue, that ambition, becomes a personal and social catastrophe. The Humanities are being banished from the educational system and that has consequences. We see how the ecological conscience has awakened and the citizenship includes the colossal loss of the devastation of the Amazon. Likewise, there are cultural assets, heritage, books, readability of references that are being lost, which are being devastated by the Little encouragement that from institutional instances is given to the preservation of that heritage.

Can we say that this is premeditated?

I do not want my thinking to be articulated in the form of controversy or provocation. To say that this is "premeditated" is an easy holder. Honestly, I think we have to address it with serenity. It is true that there is an excessive identification of culture with entertainment, but culture is not an activity of free time but what makes us free all the time. There is a very powerful entertainment industry and that makes us lose sight of the emancipatory sense, the sense of personal and social growth that culture, and the fundamental thing that is in this sense the capacity of language. It is not the same to have 1,000 words that 40,000, in no order of life. Not in the life of intimate knowledge, but also in social and political communication, so I think there are 1000 word democracies and 40,000 democracies. Culture is much closer to artistic creation than to entertainment.

Along with the impoverishment of language, we also live the perversion of meanings, the invasion of the Neolengua.

It is that at the same time that we speak of the lack of sowing in the language, it is necessary to mention the manipulation of the same, accompanied by a conformism with the absence of hue, with the thick brush, with the perversion of the concepts. What I call the improper appropriations of language, which is to call things by names that do not belong to them. Everything is part of the same set that makes us vulnerable to any kind of manipulation. It is essential to have a receiver on the other side who can distinguish what is being told. And it is not only the responsibility of the school, also the media that do not report with the correct rigor, or public speeches that do not advocate the nuance, the fine spin on expression.

You are a Basque writer in Castilian, you live along the border with France, whose government has recognized you as Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, and your work is translated into this language ... How do you live the day to day This trilingual culture?

When he spoke of linguistic ecology, he spoke of the ecology of languages, no doubt: what threatens one language threatens the rest. I think it is a situation that is lived everywhere, although it is true that there are educational systems that see it more clearly and try to fight it. When someone crosses the border or places themselves in front of the French citizenship in whatever field, they are amazed at how well they speak. It is clear that the French educational system and public debate are more concerned with the quality of the language than we have on this side of the border.

And what about the coexistence between Euskera and Castilian?

I do not care what language a person writes in, but what he says. Therefore, those who write in Basque and Spanish already have many years of coexistence, we have a fluid and natural relationship between us and we do not confuse the language of expression with the convictions of each one or with the respective creative projects. Another thing is institutional support, where there is still work to be done. We continue to have institutions focused on supporting creation in Euskera more or in a different way than that done in Castilian. And I do believe that affirmative discrimination should be revised to Basque. For example, until very recent years, until the lehendakari government Patxi López arrived, the Spanish edition received no support. It was many years of discrimination. Patxi López solved it, but in my opinion still lack in the Basque institutions a more determined conviction to consider that the support to the creation does not have to have that linguistic variable that leaves in second place the literary creation in Castilian. And I mean, for example, the Etxepare Institute, a window to the outside of Basque culture, which in its work in Spanish literature needs to be reviewed and, above all, reinforced.

On more than one occasion, you have reflected on the relationship of Euskadi with Spain, how do you understand that relationship, or that of Catalonia, at this time perhaps more tense than the Basque?

I will simply say it: I suppose there will be people living with conflict the fact of being Spanish or Basque. But there are many people, including myself, who do not live with any conflict being Basque and Spanish. Moreover, living without conflict also prepares them to be other things: Europeans. We are not in that polarity, but in that triangulation that is stimulating, necessary, fundamental. Also, let's cross the border, as I do constantly. And I find myself around me with a majority of people living without conflict being Basques and French. And on this side, the same thing happens: many people who live with joy, with naturalness, without conflict. That living in this way needs political protection, which is in public discourse. Sometimes the upheaval comes from the debate by those who live in that conflict. In any case, I believe that in the area of identities, my fundamental position is that identity is not something we receive as a series, such as the equipment of cars. Identity is something unique. I advocate, rather than being Basque, Spanish ... for being myself, with the mestizajes that life is proposing me. He would speak of the intimate originality of identity. In that sense, I can participate in a common, dynamic identity, which is that of political convictions.

Does the emergence of new political forces place us before a new era in which these political identities of which you speak have a momentum?

The economic crisis has uncovered a reality that was covered by an illusion of wealth that did not affect the whole world. The crisis forces us to rethink a lot of things, like a certain political inertia that made us understand as if things worked because yes. It is necessary to rethink the convictions of the left, of democracy and the appearance of new forces forces to rethink that inertia in a dynamic. And everything that implies a dynamic is good. That said, I do not think we need providential leaders or parties, but we need to regenerate the relationship between citizenship and politics, from the conviction that politics must be free from suspicion. The quality of the policy comes from the monitoring done by the citizen of the same in real time. There has been an inertia of abandonment of that capacity which is at the same time a responsibility of the citizens. I think this is a stimulating moment.

Can there be a parallelism with the moments after Franco's death?

I was very young then. Now the newspaper libraries talk about political leaders, but I remember the street, the importance we gave to vote. There was an understanding that democracy was not done from the top down, but from citizenship to the political class. It requires a lucid, responsible citizenship, who knows that the quality of democracy is in their hands. I think we have to recover that, but to recover that we have to recover the first thing, which started the conversation: a lucid citizenship is a citizenship formed, able to spin fine and above all to read fine speeches.
