Biography of Abelardo da Hora
He was known for portraying women and regional themes, standing out as one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century in Pernambuco.
Abelardo Germano da Hora (1924-2014) was born on the lands of the Tiúma Mill, in the city of São Lourenço da Mata, in Pernambuco, on July 31, 1924. He studied Decorative Arts at the Professor Agamenon Magalhães Industrial College. He attended the Law School of Olinda and attended the Free Course of Sculpture of the School of Fine Arts of Recife, where he was a student of Cassimiro Correia.
In 1942, he commanded the Academic Directory of Fine Arts. Between 1943 and 1945 he was hired by the industrialist Ricardo Brennand to work at Cerâmica São João, at which time he performed several works with regional motives. During his stay in the pottery, he served as a guide to the future ceramist Francisco Brennand.
In 1946, together with Hélio Feijó and other artists, he participated in the creation of the Modern Art Society of Recife, being its director for nearly ten years. In 1948 he held his first exhibition of sculptures, in the Association of Trade Employees of Pernambuco, the first exhibition of sculptures held in Recife. In 1952, Abelardo da Hora founded with Gilvan Samico, Wiltonde Souza, Wellington Virgulino, Ionaldo, Ivan Carneiro and Márius Lauritzen, the "Collective Atelier", of which he was professor and director until 1957.
Between 1955 and 1956, he performed for the City Hall of Recife several sculptures representative of popular culture, among them: "The Singers and the Vendor of Sugar Cane", in the Park May 13, "O Sertanejo", in Euclides Square. Cunha, in front of the International Club and the "Lollipop Vendor", in the garden of Dois Irmãos. In 1956, he was elected delegate of Pernambuco, in the Brazilian Section of the International Association of Plastic Arts, UNESCO.
Between 1957 and 1958, he held several exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Argentina, Mongolia, the Soviet Union, Israel and China. In 1960 he devised the municipal law for Works of Art in Buildings in Recife, during the government of Miguel Arraes, which required buildings with more than 1,500 square meters to have works of art, a sculpture or mural, transforming the city into a gallery Of open air art.
In 1962 he published his emblematic album "The Boys of Recife", with engravings made in the beak of feather, showing the miseries around the city. In 1967, he launched the collection of drawings "Danças Brasileiras de Carnaval", presented at Galeria Mirante das Artes in São Paulo. Still in the 60's, he was Director of Parks and Gardens and Director of the Division of Plastic Arts and Crafts, Recife. He founded the Popular Culture Movement, which brought together the plastic arts, music, dance and theater.
A theme widely used by Abelardo da Hora was women, with the female body, naked and an expressionist side, as well as social and regional themes, which will be eternalized in the works left in every corner of the city of Recife. Among them are: "Woman Lying", in the Shopping Center Recife, "Woman Sereia", in the Mar Hotel, "Monument to Maracatu", near the Fort of the Five Points, "Monument to the Frevo", in Rua da Aurora, "Monument The "Zumbi dos Palmares", in Praça do Carmo, "Enéas Freire and the Galo da Madrugada", in Praça Sérgio Loreto, "Monument to the Heroes of the Revolution of 1817", in Praça da República and "Os Retirantes" .
Abelardo da Hora died in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, on December 23, 2014.

Abelardo da Hora (1924-2014) foi um escultor, desenhista, gravador e ceramista brasileiro. Ficou conhecido por retratar as mulheres e os temas regionais, se destacando como um dos maiores escultores do século XX em Pernambuco.
Abelardo Germano da Hora (1924-2014) nasceu nas terras da Usina Tiúma, na cidade de São Lourenço da Mata, em Pernambuco, no dia 31 de julho de 1924. Cursou Artes Decorativas no Colégio Industrial Professor Agamenon Magalhães. Ingressou na Faculdade de Direito de Olinda e frequentou o Curso Livre de Escultura da Escola de Belas Artes do Recife, onde foi aluno de Cassimiro Correia.
Em 1942, comandou o Diretório Acadêmico de Belas Artes. Entre 1943 e 1945 foi contratado pelo industrial Ricardo Brennand, para trabalhar na Cerâmica São João, época em que realizou diversos trabalhos com motivos regionais. Durante sua permanência na cerâmica, serviu como orientador ao futuro ceramista Francisco Brennand.
Em 1946, junto com Hélio Feijó e outros artistas, participou da criação da Sociedade de Arte Moderna do Recife, sendo seu diretor por quase dez anos. Em 1948 realizou sua primeira exposição de esculturas, na Associação dos Empregados do Comércio de Pernambuco, a primeira exposição de esculturas realizada no Recife. Em 1952, Abelardo da Hora fundou junto com os artistas Gilvan Samico, Wiltonde Souza, Wellington Virgulino, Ionaldo, Ivan Carneiro e Márius Lauritzen, o “Ateliê Coletivo”, do qual foi professor e diretor até 1957.
Entre 1955 e 1956, realizou, para a Prefeitura do Recife, diversas esculturas representativas da cultura popular, entre elas: “Os Cantadores e o Vendedor de Caldo de Cana”, no Parque 13 de maio, “O Sertanejo”, na Praça Euclides da Cunha, em frente ao Clube Internacional e o “Vendedor de Pirulitos”, no horto de Dois Irmãos. Em 1956, foi eleito delegado de Pernambuco, na Seção Brasileira da Associação Internacional de Artes Plásticas, da UNESCO.
Entre 1957 e 1958, realizou diversas exposições nos Estados Unidos, na Europa, na Argentina, na Mongólia, na União Soviética, em Israel e na China. Em 1960 idealizou a lei municipal de Obras de Arte em Edificações no Recife, durante o governo de Miguel Arraes, que obrigava construções com mais de 1,5 mil metros quadrados terem obras de arte, uma escultura ou mural, transformando a cidade em uma galeria de arte a céu aberto.
Em 1962 publicou seu álbum emblemático “Os Meninos do Recife”, com gravuras feitas em bico de pena, mostrando as misérias em torno da cidade. Em 1967, lançou a coleção de desenhos “Danças Brasileiras de Carnaval”, apresentado na Galeria Mirante das Artes, em São Paulo. Ainda na década de 60, foi Diretor de Parques e Jardins e Diretor da Divisão de Artes Plásticas e Artesanato, do Recife. Fundou o Movimento de Cultura Popular, que reunia além das artes plásticas, a música, a dança e o teatro.
Uma temática muito utilizada por Abelardo da Hora eram as mulheres, com o corpo feminino, desnudo e uma vertente expressionista, como também os temas sociais e regionais, que vão ficar eternizados nas obras deixadas em cada canto da cidade do Recife. Entre elas se destacam: “Mulher Deitada”, no Shopping Center Recife, “Mulher Sereia”, no Mar Hotel, “Monumento ao Maracatu”, próximo ao Forte das Cinco Pontas, “Monumento ao Frevo”, na Rua da Aurora, “Monumento a Zumbi dos Palmares”, na Praça do Carmo, “Enéas Freire e o Galo da Madrugada”, na Praça Sérgio Loreto, “Monumento aos Heróis da Revolução de 1817”, na Praça da República e “Os Retirantes”, no Parque Dona Lindu.
Abelardo da Hora faleceu no Recife, Pernambuco, no dia 23 de dezembro de 2014.
