The collection of Popular Literature in Versos of the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation, the largest in Latin America, nowadays with more than 9,000 cordel leaflets was formed from the 1960s and, from this initiative resulted in an extensive bibliography, composed of catalogs, anthologies And specialized studies.
In Brazil, the cord appeared in the second half of the nineteenth century and expanded from Bahia to Pará, before reaching other states. The leaflets, sold at the fairs, became the main source of entertainment and information for the population, who saw in them the newspaper and the encyclopedia, almost simultaneously.
The subjects were the most varied: the adventures of cavalry, the narratives of love and suffering, the stories of animals, the adventures and heroes' tales, the wonderful tales and a myriad of others that came to us through the oral literature of the Iberian Peninsula and That the popular memory took care of preserving and transmitting.
In addition, the northeastern poet was incorporating into this novel, facts that are closer to the public, occurring in their social environment: feats of cangaceiros, political events, catastrophes, miracles and even propaganda, with religious and commercial purposes.
The woodcuts and drawings that illustrate the covers of the brochures are a manifestation of the creativity of the popular artist, with their synthetic plastic solutions, in which the strong feature, of rude and beautiful expressiveness, stands out.
The cord is valued as a poetic expression of high significance by writers of the stature of Ariano Suassuna, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Jorge Amado, Guimarães Rosa, Mario de Andrade, João Cabral de Melo Neto, motivating (and continuing to motivate) studies and researches in the Areas of Anthropology, Folklore, Linguistics, Literature, History, among others.
PROJECT
The general objective of the Popular Literature Project in Verses in the House of Rui Barbosa is the preservation, conservation and availability of this unique collection in the world. Given its characteristics of rarity, originality and antiquity, it is necessary to guarantee its preservation against the wastage of time and the handling, subjecting the collection to specific technical and technological treatments, ensuring the restoration of the leaflets, the making of envelopes Suitable for storage and scanning.
The revision and insertion of the catalog records in the Foundation's database, allows the online consultation of all the collection, studies and research on this manifestation of Brazilian popular culture.
The digital version of the brochures is available on the FCRB portal. It was initially designed to make available the collection of Leandro Gomes de Barros, researched in depth by Profa. Ivone Maia with the support of FAPERJ, in a project in partnership with the House of Rui Barbosa, which was kept unpublished and served as a model for the project with Petrobrás. This work on Leandro Gomes de Barros was maintained in full, as well as the structure of the site and its graphic design.
In the second moment, with the sponsorship of Petrobrás, the scope of the site was expanded, including leaflets and biographies of 20 other poets, and bibliography on the available cordel in the Foundation's collection, with 400 references, among articles, books, Dissertations.
The collection, with some 9,000 cordel leaflets, under the custody of the Library, is available for online consultation through its catalog references, which can be consulted by indexes such as author, title, subject, place of publication, publisher / Typography, date, cordel literature genre, in the Library database.
Of this set, about 2,340 booklets of the authors related in poets and singers are available in digital version, with their original versions and variants. Modifications are considered to be those editions that bring some alteration of the original, be they minor modifications of content, the cover and back cover or another authorship of the same story and, therefore, the acrostic in the acrostic in the last different stanza.

Em entrevista concedida ao Ministério da Cultura doBrasil, Ivone da Silva Ramos Maya diz que "pretendo encaminhar uma proposta para a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (Unesco), para que o cordel seja tombado como patrimônio da humanidade”.
O Acervo de Literatura Popular em Versos da Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa, o maior da América Latina, atualmente com mais de 9.000 folhetos de cordel foi formado a partir da década de 1960 e, dessa iniciativa resultou uma extensa bibliografia, composta de catálogos, antologias e estudos especializados.
No Brasil, o cordel surgiu na segunda metade do século XIX e expandiu-se da Bahia ao Pará, antes de alcançar outros Estados. Os folhetos, vendidos nas feiras, tornaram-se a principal fonte de divertimento e informação para a população, que via neles o jornal e a enciclopédia, de maneira quase simultânea.
Os temas eram os mais variados: as aventuras de cavalaria, as narrativas de amor e sofrimento, as histórias de animais, as peripécias e diabruras de heróis, os contos maravilhosos e uma infinidade de outros, que nos chegaram pela Literatura oral da Península Ibérica e que a memória popular encarregou-se de preservar e transmitir.
Além disso, o poeta nordestino foi incorporando a esse romanceiro, fatos mais próximos do público, ocorridos em seu ambiente social: façanhas de cangaceiros, acontecimentos políticos, catástrofes, milagres e até mesmo a propaganda, com fins religiosos e comerciais.
As xilogravuras e desenhos que ilustram as capas dos folhetos são uma manifestação da criatividade do artista popular, com suas soluções plásticas sintéticas, em que se destaca o traço forte, de rude e bela expressividade.
O cordel é valorizado como expressão poética de alta significação por escritores do porte de Ariano Suassuna, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Jorge Amado, Guimarães Rosa, Mario de Andrade, João Cabral de Melo Neto, motivando (e continua a motivar) estudos e pesquisas nas áreas de Antropologia, Folclore, Lingüística, Literatura, História, entre outras.
PROJETO
O objetivo geral do Projeto Literatura Popular em Versos na Casa de Rui Barbosa é a preservação, conservação e disponibilização dessa coleção única no mundo. Dadas suas características de raridade, originalidade e antiguidade, faz-se necessário garantir sua preservação contra o desgaste do tempo e do manuseio, submetendo-se a coleção a tratamentos técnicos e tecnológicos específicos, assegurando-se a restauração dos folhetos, a confecção de invólucros adequados para a guarda e sua digitalização.
A revisão e inserção dos registros catalográficos na base de dados a Fundação, possibilita a consulta on-line de todo o acervo, a realização de estudos e trabalhos de pesquisas sobre essa manifestação da cultura popular brasileira.
A versão digital dos folhetos é disponibilizada no portal da FCRB. Ele foi inicialmente concebido para disponibilizar a coleção de Leandro Gomes de Barros, pesquisado em profundidade pela profa. Ivone Maia com o apoio da FAPERJ, num projeto em parceria com a Casa de Rui Barbosa, que foi mantido inédito e serviu de modelo para o projeto com a Petrobrás. Esse trabalho sobre Leandro Gomes de Barros foi mantido na íntegra, assim como também a estrutura do site e seu projeto gráfico.
No segundo momento, com o patrocínio Petrobrás, expandiu-se o escopo do site incluindo-se folhetos e biografias de 20 outros poetas, e bibliografia sobre cordel disponível no acervo da Fundação, com 400 referências, dentre artigos, livros, recortes, teses e dissertações.
O acervo, com cerca de 9.000 folhetos de cordel, sob a guarda da Biblioteca, está disponível para consulta online por meio de suas referências catalográficas, que podem ser consultadas por índices, como o de autor, título, assunto, local de publicação, editora/tipografia, data, gênero literatura de cordel, na base de dados da Biblioteca.
Desse conjunto, cerca de 2.340 folhetos dos autores relacionados em poetas e cantadores estão disponíveis em versão digital, com suas versões originais e variantes. São consideradas "variantes" as edições que trazem alguma alteração do original, sejam pequenas modificações de conteúdo, na capa e contracapa ou outra autoria da mesma história e, portanto, o acróstico na última estrofe diferente.
