The capital of São Paulo breathed new life 15 meters below the surface of the earth. The Theater of the Center of the Earth, inaugurated 16 years ago in Sumaré, Zona Oeste of São Paulo, has been renovated and reopens the doors as a curatorship that promises to expose the work of creative and experimental artists of the present time.
The underground building of the building located on the narrow Rua Piracuama was the idea of award-winning theater director Ricardo Karman, who is also an architect. The intimate theater with Italian stage, small, and audience for one hundred people took ten years to be ready and at least five others to be completely regularized by the City of São Paulo. To get to the theater, you need to go down 61 steps of stairs or use an elevator. Despite the depth, the internet "catches down".
Asked how the underground theater idea came about, Karman explains that he was guided by a pragmatic instinct. "All of my work is procedural [when the project has no defined outcome and advances as opportunities]. I rehearsed in a hall next to this land with the Kompanhia of the Earth Center, which I founded in 1989, and thought it was a good space for a theater, "he explained.
The director said that the works were difficult because they demanded a lot of money, engineering to strengthen the structure of the building and licenses of the City Hall. "It was difficult and I did not have much money, but I did a guerrilla work and it counted on unexpected aid, as of the own municipal police that came here and ended up being enchanted with the idea," he said.
The inauguration of the Theater of the Earth Center officially took place in 2001, but in 1999, Karman opened the space for guests marrying the plastic artist Keren Ora Karman on stage after a few days of rehearsal and with the presence of critics of theater. "It was fun. Critics wondered if we would win the Shell prize, "says the director, who two years later was awarded the award for the show" Journey to the Center of the Earth. "
Keren took over the management of space, creating arts courses for children and adolescents, and elaborating the concept of the new phase of theater, which this Monday becomes a cultural space with musical presentations and curatorship to receive more plays.
"We have to give content to the space and we rescued the concept of the work we did in the Petrobras Circuit in 2001, when several groups presented experimental shows here," recalls Keren. "It will be an alternative space, experimental and contemporary, presenting artists whose works involve research, experience and moments of enchantment," he explained.
The founder of the theater helps explain the concept of the new proposal. "Where is the contemporary? What is the language of our time? How is the artistic expression of this age of wonder and speed? We want to bring here the production of the guys who rightly express this contemporary thinking, "said Karman.
Three curators will assist in the selection of the artists and projects that appear in the Center of the Earth. Director Ruy Filho will be hosting two-week shows that will be able to occupy all areas of the building, including the stairs and the café-bar. The playwright Dib Carneiro Neto takes care of the children's project. "If it's Little Red Riding Hood, have a new proposal for the old story," he explained.
The theatrical program is still being prepared by the curators, but the musical, which will be developed by journalist Alexandre Matias, begins on Monday. He will offer a new season proposal for shows, with four different performances by the same artist, who is challenged to leave the comfort zone.
"I think the show turned into a formulaic presentation. The artists begin all the shows of a season with the same song, after some songs present the musicians, then they make a cutie. Loses the unexpected, "explains Matias.
The first artist to perform is the prolific Tatá Aeroplano, which already develops musical projects of genres and diverse partners, such as Otto, Criolo and Karina Buhr. "There will be four Mondays that are very different from each other so I can explore things that I really like, including the display of clips I've been directing," says Tata.
"Despite completing 15 years of his career, I will not present old songs. I like to look forward and look for news. I will present what I am doing and what I am going to launch, pointing to the future and the next 15 years, "he explains.
The re-inauguration of Centro Cultural Terra da Terra takes place on Monday, with the Tatá Aeroplano show at 8 pm. Tickets for the event are on sale online and cost R $ 30.

O Teatro do Centro da Terra, inaugurado há 16 anos no Sumaré, Zona Oeste de São Paulo, foi reformado e reabre as portas como uma curadoria que promete expor o trabalho de artistas criativos e experimentais da atualidade.
A construção no subsolo do edifício localizado na estreita Rua Piracuama foi ideia do premiado diretor de teatro Ricardo Karman, que também é arquiteto. O teatro intimista com palco italiano, pequeno, e plateia para cem pessoas levou dez anos para ficar pronto e pelo menos outros cinco para ser completamente regularizado pela Prefeitura de São Paulo. Para chegar ao teatro, é preciso descer 61 degraus de escada ou usar um elevador. Apesar da profundeza, internet "pega lá embaixo".
Questionado sobre como surgiu a ideia do teatro subterrâneo, Karman explica que foi guiado por um instinto pragmático. “Todos os meus trabalhos são processuais [quando o projeto não tem desfecho definido e avança conforme as oportunidades]. Eu ensaiava em um salão ao lado deste terreno com a Kompanhia do Centro da Terra, que fundei em 1989, e pensava que era um bom espaço para um teatro”, explicou.
O diretor contou que as obras foram difíceis porque demandavam muito dinheiro, engenharia para fortalecer a estrutura do prédio e licenças da Prefeitura. “Era difícil e não tinha muito dinheiro, mas fiz um trabalho guerrilheiro e que contou com ajudas inesperadas, como dos próprios fiscais da Prefeitura que vinham aqui e acabavam se encantando com a ideia.”, disse.
A inauguração do Teatro do Centro da Terra ocorreu oficialmente em 2001, mas em 1999, Karman realizou a abertura do espaço para convidados casando-se com a artista plástica Keren Ora Karman no palco, após alguns dias de ensaio e com a presença de críticos de teatro. “Foi divertido. Os críticos perguntavam se ganharíamos o prêmio Shell”, conta o diretor, que dois anos mais tarde foi agraciado com o prêmio pelo espetáculo “Viagem ao Centro da Terra”.
Keren assumiu a gestão do espaço, criando cursos de artes para crianças e adolescentes, e elaborando o conceito da nova fase do teatro, que nesta segunda se torna um espaço cultural com apresentações musicais e curadoria para receber mais peças de teatro.
“Temos que dar conteúdo ao espaço e resgatamos o conceito do trabalho que fizemos no Circuito Petrobras em 2001, quando diversos grupos apresentaram espetáculos experimentais aqui”, relembra Keren. “Será um espaço alternativo, experimental e contemporâneo, apresentando artistas cujos trabalhos envolvem pesquisa, experiência e momentos de encantamento”, explicou.
O fundador do teatro ajuda a explicar o conceito da nova proposta. “Onde está o contemporâneo? Qual é a linguagem do nosso tempo? Como é a expressão artística dessa era de deslumbramento e velocidade? Queremos trazer para cá a produção dos caras que justamente expressam esse pensamento contemporâneo”, disse Karman.
Três curadores vão ajudar na seleção dos artistas e projetos que se apresentam no Centro da Terra. O diretor Ruy Filho trará espetáculos de duas semanas e que poderão ocupar todos os ambientes do edifício, inclusive as escadas e o café-bar. O dramaturgo Dib Carneiro Neto cuida do projeto infantil. “Se for Chapeuzinho Vermelho, que tenha uma nova proposta para a velha história”, explicou.
A programação teatral ainda está sendo preparada pelos curadores, mas a musical, que será desenvolvida pelo jornalista Alexandre Matias, começa nesta segunda. Ele oferecerá uma nova proposta de temporada de shows, com quatro apresentações diferentes de um mesmo artista, que é desafiado a sair da zona de conforto.
“Acho que o show virou uma apresentação formulaica. Os artistas começam todos os shows de uma temporada com a mesma música, depois de algumas canções apresentam os músicos, em seguida fazem uma gracinha. Perde o inesperado”, explica Matias.
O primeiro artista a se apresentar é o prolífico Tatá Aeroplano, que já desenvolve projetos musicais de gêneros e parceiros diversos, como Otto, Criolo e Karina Buhr. “Serão quatro segundas-feiras bem diferentes entre si em que poderei explorar coisas que realmente gosto, inclusive com a exibição de clipes que dirigi”, adianta Tatá.
“Apesar de completar 15 anos de carreira, não vou apresentar músicas antigas. Gosto de olhar para frente e buscar novidades. Vou apresentar o que estou fazendo e o que vou lançar, apontando para o futuro e para os próximo 15 anos”, explica.
A reinauguração do Espaço Cultural Centro da Terra ocorre nesta segunda-feira, com o show de Tatá Aeroplano às 20 horas. Os ingressos para o evento estão à venda pela internet e custam R$ 30.
