DESIGN FESTA (デザインフェスタ) is an international event which is held for two consecutive days in Tokyo (東京). Anyone, regardless of age, nationality, and talent, can join the fun in order to encourage freedom of creative expression. This is considered to be the single largest art festival in Asia where you can see different performances, artistic expressions, international cuisines, diversity, and many more! DESIGN FESTA Vol. 45 is going to be held from May 27 to 28, 2017, from 11 AM to 7 PM. There will be around 15,000 exhibitors and 5,000 booths at the venue, Tokyo Big Sight East Halls (東京ビッグサイト東ホール) 4 to 8.
DESIGN FESTA was originally founded in 1994 by former fashion designer and stylist, Kunie Usuki (臼木邦江). It started as a small event, and later on, thousands of artists from around the world started participating. It offers several activities such as photography, music, painting, toys, performances, etc. There is also a stage for live concerts, as well as restaurants, cafes, and bars.
The passion and diversity found in the event are like nowhere else around the world. Artists from all levels (children to elderly) are welcome to showcase their talents. However, there are some things that are prohibited in the event such as health services, fortune-telling, and illegal sale of copyrighted works.
The two-day fair will be dedicated to all kinds of art such as performance art, live drawing sessions, paintings, fashion, handmade crafts, and many more. Art enthusiasts will definitely find something that suits them.
Those who’ll be attending in an alternative fashion, such as lolita (ロリータ) or steampunk, are very much welcomed. However, do take note that DESIGN FESTA is an event for original art so you are not allowed to do cosplay as it involves copyrighted characters.
Animals are also forbidden to enter the event in order to protect the artwork and provide consideration to people. But of course, visually impaired people can bring their guide dogs with them.
There are several things that you need to take note of during the event such as asking permission from the exhibitor before taking any pictures of them and/or their work. Most items on display are available for purchase so you can always ask the exhibitor about it.
Furthermore, disputes between exhibitors and visitors will not be the responsibility of DESIGN FESTA. There is a designated smoking area if you’d like to smoke. If you ever require medical attention, go to the first aid station which is located inside the halls. Also, do mind your manners as harassment of exhibitors and visitors can result in your removal from the venue.
Tickets
Tickets for DESIGN FESTA Vol. 45 can be purchased in advance at 800 yen for one day. You may also purchase tickets at the door for 1,000 yen. An advance two-day pass is 1,500 yen, while it will cost 1,800 yen if you buy it at the venue. It is advisable that you purchase in advance as there will be a long line of people at the entrance before the event opens.
