The main building of the Tretyakov Gallery, where the family of the founder of the museum, Pavel Tretyakov, lived in the 1850s, will be expanded. The project will be a partnership between Rem Koolhaas, winner of the Pritzker award, and the SPEECH office, which planned the futuristic facades of the new building.

Free access

Initially, the building, which will open in 2020, will receive the collection of drawings from the Tretyakov Gallery. The project includes the exposure of these illustrations, which are generally not open to the public due to fragility and sensitivity to light.

According to the director of the Tretyakov Gallery, Zelfira Tregulova, the inspiration for the new building came from the Hall of Study of the Albertina museum in Vienna. In the Austrian museum, about 600,000 exhibits can be viewed at computer terminals. Although it is not possible to replicate this in Moscow, Tregulova is convinced of the importance of promoting free access to drawings, prints and watercolors.

"Access will be granted here to all, not just to art historians. It is a great effort, but it is an important part of our work that must be done, "said Tregulova in an interview with the Russian Gazette.

Gallery founder Pavel Tretyakov began collecting drawings, watercolors and engravings at the same time as the paintings. After the Bolshevik revolution, the collection received additional items from other museums and now has more than 30,000 works dating from the 18th to the 20th centuries.

The collection includes from the classics - such as the pilots of Karl Briullov and the "biblical sketches" of Aleksandr Ivanov - to the Russian avant-garde and to the graphic art of the theater universe, such as the works of Aleksandr Benois and Nicholas Roerich, and illustrations for the opera Futuristic "Victory over the Sun", staged by Kazimir Malevitch.
