Ben Eine's mural appears in Shoreditch one month on from the tragedy.
A London street artist has created a new mural to honour the victims and survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire.
Ben Eine has painted words from Ben Okri’s poem ‘Grenfell Tower, June 2017’, which was written in the days after the fire. The line ‘You saw it in the tears of those who survived’ appears in large writing, with the full 1,600 word poem appearing as the mural’s background.
The mural, which marks the one-month anniversary of the atrocity, is part of a social justice art project called Paint the Change. It was founded by journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari, who wants to start dialogue about urgent social issues through the arts. The Grenfell mural, which has been painted at Village Underground in Shoreditch, is the project’s first artwork.
Bahari says the mural is “our attempt to share Ben’s poem with the rest of the world.”
“I couldn’t stop crying when I saw that Ben Okri had said it all in his beautiful poem,” he said. “I repeated one line for days: ‘You heard it in the cries in the air howling for justice’.”
Okri, who won the Booker Prize in 1991, said that the mural is “an extraordinary idea.”
“Anything that can draw attention to that outrage to humanity, anything that can commemorate the dead and help the survivors has my support,” he said.
Eine, whose work was presented as a gift to Barack Obama by David Cameron on 2010, said that he hopes the mural “will help keep this discussion alive and bring the victims and survivors out of the shadows so that they can receive justice.”
