Founder
Antonis Benakis, born of an ancient family of the Greek Diaspora, was born in Alexandria in 1873 and was still living with the tradition of euphoria which, since the first post-revolutionary years of liberated Greece, has been established mainly in the field of Greek Hellenism.

In Alexandria he began to manifest his collectible interests while at the same time the idea of donation matured, which was crystallized by his definitive establishment in Athens in 1926.

The mental world of Antonios Benakis was formed at a time when the rehabilitation of the national borders of Greece was a common vision on the parallel ideals of urban modernization and educational regeneration. His proverbial generosity was also indicative of the strengthening of many other intellectual institutions and important cultural events.

However, Antonios Benakis' personality was formed in a family atmosphere conducive to the formation of such ideals. The same climate was nurtured by his sister Penelope Delta (1874-1941), the rare sensitivity novelist who with her books grew generations of Greek youth.

The founder of the Museum would certainly have an influence on the example of his father, Emmanuel Benakis (1843-1929), close associate of the great politician Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936), who also donated his fortune by funding many charitable foundations and contributing to the rehabilitation of refugees Populations after the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

Within this context, only Antonios Benakis' offer can be understood. Its main feature remains the "in vivo" assignment to the Nation of the Museum that it created. However, his constant care for the best possible organization, enrichment and securing of the Museum's finances until his death in 1954 should also be made.

CHRONOLOGY OF CENTRAL BUILDING

The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture is housed in one of the nicest neoclassical buildings of Athens close to the National Garden and the Greek Parliament.

The building was offered to the Nation to create the museum that would host his collections Antonis Benakis by himself and his three sisters, Alexandra, Pinelopi and Argini. After its most recent rebuilding (1989-2000), it houses a unique, long-lasting exhibition on the course of Greek culture from prehistory to the 20th century.

A small building was the original core of the complex. The first extension with substantial interventions was made by Anastasios Metaxas in 1911 after the purchase of the property by Emmanuel Benakis, father of Antonis. The exterior marble scale, the characteristic Doric propylon at the central entrance of Vas. Sofias Boulevard and the morphological elements of the facades were added. The next expansion was in 1930 to turn the building into a museum where the collections of Greek and Islamic art by Antonis Benakis were housed, as well as a collection of Chinese ceramics. There followed a series of additions in 1965, 1968 and 1973, which were necessary for housing more and more donations. After the expansion and redevelopment of the years 1989-2000 the building houses the collection of Greek art and cultural material of the Benaki Museum, the "Spyridon & Eurydice Costopoulos Hall" for periodical exhibitions, the Library and a number of functions and offices of the Foundation.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.

Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,

but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.

CRONOLOGIA DO EDIFÍCIO CENTRAL
