Ask for permission to Xangô, one of the main deities of the pantheon of the African gods, very much worshiped in the religions of African matrix. With great respect, this is what the participants of one of the most traditional Afoxés of Pernambuco do, Alafin Oyó who adopted this orixá as patron. The name, translated as 'lord of the palaces', is linked to the fourth majesty of the kingdom of Yoruba, on the African continent, where today lies Nigeria. Founded in 1986, the group celebrates 31 years of militancy and black resistance in the state of Pernambuco.

Fabiano Santos, reports that the entity was designed with the objective of uniting people from different social strata, residents of different cities.

The president of Afoxé, Fabiano Santos, reports that the organization was designed to unite people from various social backgrounds, residents of different cities, practitioners and non-practitioners of candomblé, including atheists, who had in common the connection with the black movement . "We decided to establish ourselves as a manifestation beyond the carnivalesque and without connection only with a terreiro. Afoxé Alafin Oyó emerged as an agglutinative space where blacks and blacks from different realities could articulate in the struggle for the affirmation of black identity and against prejudice and racial discrimination".

Whoever sees the group shining and singing songs of black resistance can not imagine the hard battles they faced on the streets. Fabiano reports that encounters and presentations were limited by racism and remnants of censorship from the period of the Military Dictatorship. Even so, Ijexá's footsteps continued with the sound of the atabaques, agogôs, and other instruments on the streets of Olinda. "Despite the term 'reacreativa', our status seeks to highlight, above all, the teachings of the Yoruba nagô tradition, praising our gods through music, dance, song and rituals," explains Fabiano.

Participants report that they grew up within the afoxé and it was through him that they learned to value and defend the black identity. It was within Alafin that other groups known as Afoxé Oxum Pandá, the fourth oldest in Pernambuco, were born. Babalorixá Genivaldo Lemos Barbosa, president of Oxum Pandá, reports that he was one of Alafin's associates. "My afoxé was founded in 1995. Before, I was already Alafin, I was one of the first partners."

Despite the bureaucratic regime that requires the entity to have a statute that establishes a formalized hierarchy, the coordinators explain that the interaction between the members happens in a democratic and horizontal way. Everyone has a voice. This makes the difference in the group, showing above all the political character.

Percussionist and one of the directors of the group, Leonardo Azevedo says that besides taking to the four corners of the world the Nagô tradition, the group teaches what was left by the African ancestors. "We paraded on the streets in red and white colors, playing the ijexá rhythm and singing songs affirming our black identity and African religiousness."

Dancer and coordinator of the Alafin Oyó Ballet, Maria Luiza (25) explains that the group's choreography respects and reveres each divinity: "From Exu to Oxalá, everyone is respected and worshiped through movements."

The festival is very present in African culture and afoxé is very concerned about making the atmosphere cheerful and fraternal. Just as in the houses of candomblé, young people learn from their elders and teach those who are coming, forming a large family.

A cultura e o amor devem estar juntos.
Vamos compartilhar.

Culture is not what enters the eyes and ears,

but what modifies the way of looking and hearing.
