Guernica: All the ingredients of a war. --- Guernica: Todos os ingredientes de uma guerra.

The Spanish museum Reina Sofia in Madrid opens on Wednesday a large exhibition on the work of the painter Pablo Picasso to celebrate the 80th anniversary of his masterpiece "Guernica".

Guernica

The exhibition "Pity and Terror in Picasso: The Road to Guernica", which will run from April 5 to September 4, celebrates the 80th anniversary of the creation of the painting by Pablo Tuiz Picasso and the 25th anniversary of his arrival From the work to the Reina Sofia (Queen Sofia) museum.

The museum says it is "a great exhibition" which will bring together 150 masterpieces from the museum's collection and more than 30 institutions from all over the world, such as the Picasso Museum and the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, among others.

"Guernica" is the most emblematic work of the career of Pablo Picasso, who was born in Spain in 1881 and died in France in 1973 and perhaps also in the twentieth century art.

The oil painting on canvas, 349.3cm high and 776.6cm wide, shows the horrors of bombing the Basque city of Guernica by German planes of the Nazi regime, supporting the dictator Francisco Franco on April 26, 1937 , During the Civil War of Spain, in what was seen as a test of the aerial bombings of World War II (1939-1945).

In the eyes of a military man, Pablo Picasso's Guernica painting contains almost all the ingredients of a war. Admiral Vieira Matias knew this picture of Picasso when he was still at school and now, years later, before an image of Guernica, Vieira Matias tells us what he sees. For Admiral Vieira Matias, in this picture the horrors of war are worth it, but these horrors may still be worse.

Picasso's most famous painting was painted on an order made by the Spanish Republic (a democratic regime that ended with the civil war and the Franco dictatorship) during the spring of 1937 to be exhibited in the Spanish pavilion of the Paris International Exhibition And quickly became a symbol against the horrors of war.

A few years before he died, Picasso asked for the picture to be returned to Spain only when public liberties were restored in that country.

"Guernica", the picture, arrived in Spain in 1981, after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco (1939-1975) and the restoration of democracy in 1977.

Between the Paris International Exposition and 1981, Picasso's painting was exhibited in Oslo, Norway, Copenhagen, Denmark, Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden, and London, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester in the United Kingdom between 1938 and 1939 .

After the victory of dictator Francisco Franco in Spain, and before the start of World War II, the painting was sent to the United States, where it was shown in the first Museum of Contemporary Art in San Francisco and the Museum of Modern Art MoMA), New York, later, an institution where it remained until 1981, after brief passage through North American cities such as Chicago and Philadelphia, and Brazil in the 1950s.

"The most influential work of art of all time" 100 years ago.

By 1915 Dadaism was gaining a great prominence in the artistic scene, causing some discomfort in the observers and causing everyone to question the real concept of the word art. In this period, the artist Marcel Duchamp assumes an anti-art attitude and appropriates already made objects. In 1917, it exposes his work titled The Fountain, in which it was a simple and common inverted white urinal. With this provocative attitude, Duchamp ended up establishing a debate between Art and Concept, where he said that to be an artist it was not necessary to have a gift or skill to produce beautiful paintings or sculptures, but to present everyone with something totally different, new and unexpected.

One realizes that Duchamp never bothered to develop something beautiful, but rather for the search of a reaction of the public. In a sarcastic and ironic way, the artist has always criticized the art concepts of a cultural society. From the moment that Duchamp removed that simple object from the daily life and placed it in an exhibition, this one stopped being that object of before, taking on another meaning. The physical inversion of the object corresponds to the inversion of its meaning.

I believe Duchamp did not aim to make anyone consider the urinal as a work of art, but to change the standard thinking that people usually used to have and develop a different view than normal. In this case, Duchamp wanted to show that that object had another side and is far beyond what we actually see. His purpose was precisely to provoke this provocation among people, contradicting what much of society considered to be an art.

Museums from around the world will celebrate, from Sunday, the centenary of Marcel Duchamp's iconic piece "The Fountain," a porcelain urinal considered critically "the most influential work of art of all time."

According to The Artnewspaper, Sunday marks the date when the work was first presented in 1917 at the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York and rejected by the selection committee.

"The Fountain", white porcelain urinal, is also considered one of the most representative works of Dada in France.

With this work, Duchamp wanted to question the concept of the word art, presenting a ready made object to launch the debate provocatively.

In the world celebration, museums from ten countries will enter: United States, Germany, Japan, China, Israel, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Holland, Switzerland.

In this initiative, visitors arriving at museums between 3 pm and 4 pm on Sunday will have free admission if they say Richard Mutt, the pseudonym with which Duchamp signed the work in 1917.

Some of these museums, such as the Staedel Museum in Frankfurt and the Philadelphia Museum of Art-home in the United States, which bring together Duchamp's largest collection of works, will choose some bathrooms for readings and performances.

The Berardo Museum in Lisbon has three works by Duchamp: "Boîte", Series C, set up by Iliazd in 1958, "Le Porte-bouteilles" (1914-1964) and "Plan du Porte Bouteilles" (1964).

Contacted by the agency Lusa, source of communication of the museum indicated that no initiative is planned on the centenary of "The Source".

What is art for? Discussion in the Hermitage Theater, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of The Art Newspaper. The Art Newspaper. --- Porque você precisa de arte? Discussão no Teatro Hermitage, dedicado ao 25º aniversário do jornal Art.

On December 15, a talk show took place at the Hermitage Theater in the genre of an art investigation on the topic "What does art need?". The discussion was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of The Art Newspaper. It was attended by Mikhail Piotrovsky, Vladimir Pozner, Inna Bazhenova, Anna Somers Cox, Irina Prokhorova, Tatyana Chernigovskaya, Alexey Uchitel, Garrett Johnston. We present you with a video and a transcript of the discussion.

Michael Piotrovsky: I am pleased to open our today's performance, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of The Art Newspaper. I am very glad to see you all today in this room in the building of the Hermitage Theater. We are very happy that we have been friends with the newspaper for many years, and I think that today we will once again show our devotion to the world museum and art space, of which the Hermitage is a part. I gladly give the floor to Inna Borisovna Bazhenova, our long-time friend, whom we love very much.

Inna Bazhenova: The Art Newspaper has been published for 25 years. During this time, the world has changed a lot, but the newspaper has remained true to itself. And for me this is a very important mission - to maintain its objectivity and independence. And I am proud that we keep this international publication in any conditions that are not always favorable to art. It is especially joyful that for almost four years the Russian newspaper has come out, which unites objective, unbiased news from around the world and the hot, emotional opinions of artists, gallery owners and curators. I would like to thank the partners of our today's celebration. The general partner is the Four Seasons Hotel, our partner Gazprom private banking, the BMW company, the Mikhailov Gallery Gallery and the MBG wine trade company. I want to congratulate everyone who makes our newspaper, and especially the founder of the newspaper Umberto Allemandi and the permanent head of our head English edition, Anna Somers Cox. And in the person of Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, thank the Hermitage - our partner today, who received us in these magnificent walls.

Anna Somers Cox: Ladies and gentlemen, I never could have imagined that I would be performing in this theater. Even when in 1978 I had the honor of sitting with Academician Piotrovsky in the office that my friend Mikhail still occupies. 25 years ago we, with my husband Umberto Allemandi, conceived this newspaper - and managed not only to survive, but also to succeed. Then Inna Bazhenova joined us, and now she is the head of all publications included in our network. Why do we discuss this simple question: why do we need art? 25 years ago it seemed that the world had calmed down, that an era of justice was coming, that the world was ready for progress and for a bright future. But the reality turned out to be much worse than we could have guessed. Who could imagine that we will see the revival of iconoclasm and the destruction of monuments, who thought that we would see terrorism and the fear with which we live, as well as populist politicians who prosper at the expense of all this? What happened to art?

At least in the West, art was heavily discredited, for example, by the art market and other speculations that distort the very nature of contemporary art. The idea that goes back to romanticism, that art is some kind of substitute for the divine, has been completely destroyed, and art is desacralized. The idea that art is some kind of revolutionary force may be, and remains, still bright, but money manages to pacify even the most revolutionary artists quite quickly. Discussing why art is needed, we want people outside the world of art to help us with their views and experiences. When we held an event of this format in London, we had a soldier, a theologian, a mathematician and a politician, and the "investigator" was a very famous, famous lawyer. Today we have a literary critic, director, psychologist and marketer. And the famous journalist, who, I hope, will question them mercilessly.

Mikhail Piotrovsky: I am pleased to introduce our speakers. These are all wonderful and famous people. Vladimir Vladimirovich Posner is a famous television interviewer. Irina Dmitrievna Prokhorova is a famous publisher. Tatyana Vladimirovna Chernigovskaya is a famous master of cognitive research. Alexey Efimovich Teacher is a famous film director. Garrett Johnston is a famous marketer, philosopher. At the beginning of this remarkable discussion, I want to say two words. First of all, in my opinion, no one needs the arts while it is. It's like air. And when it is not there, then people begin to understand that it is necessary, and now this is the moment. And the second. Art should make peace, but not quarrel. This is a very controversial thesis, because in reality it almost never happens. These are two important things that one must bear in mind and, perhaps, argue with them.

Vladimir Pozner: Good afternoon, as the prosecutor, I am given the first word. I would like you, dear defendants, or the defendants, as you prefer, to remind you that you have to speak out about what art is for and whether art is necessary in general. In the sense in which it is generally possible to use the word "necessary" for art. Who needs what for? Art has the same need for man as food. "As it is, how to love," Dostoevsky said. But is Fedor Mikhailovich right? After all, if you deprive a person of food and drink, he will surely die. Who before, who later, but inevitably. But if you deprive him of art? There are probably millions of people on this planet who have never come into contact with art. They live.

If you feed a person with very poor-quality food, some kind of constant fast food, and give him to drink only Coca-Cola or derivatives from this drink, what are the chances that he will grow up healthy physically? And if you give him ersatz instead of art or do not give art at all, what are the chances that he will grow up in a spiritual sense healthy? I do not know if it's possible to start thinking about it first. And further. We all know the expression of the ancient Romans Ars longa, vita brevis, that is, "Art is eternal, life is short". But if it is eternal, can it be said that art changes? "Has changed for the last ..." And how art has changed? Now, if we read Aristophanes' plays with great pleasure, if we die in ecstasy with Rembrandt's pictures, if Bach's music takes us to some strange place, then we are all the same. Do the plays of Tennessee Williams or Shostakovich's music differ in principle, and, finally, Picasso's painting? Is not it just art? What is modern or out-of-date art? If it is not modern, is it art? This is another question that interests me personally, and I'm curious if any of you will touch it. "Art belongs to the people, it must be understood and loved by it" - in a literal translation. So said Clara Zetkin, a well-known German Marxist. But in Soviet Russia thought was altered and said: "Art belongs to the people, it must be clear to the people", and not "understood." But in general, it should be clear to the people? It is necessary? Or maybe you do not need this at all? Also the question is not the last one. These are the questions that interest me today. And now I will call the first defendant.

When I thought who to call first, I remembered the tradition when in the 18th century the English fleet was determined whether the officer was guilty or not, - they took a dagger, put it on a polished table and rotated it. If the point in the direction of the officer, then guilty. If not, then no. I did not have a dagger, but in the hotel room I arranged four papers with the names of our speakers, as they are now called, took a knife and twisted it. And I give you my word that I will call the accused precisely in the order in which they hit the tip of the knife. The first or first - it was Irina Prokhorova.

Irina Prokhorova: I do not know what the dagger showed you, but it turns out as always - ladies first. Dear Mr. investigator, respected judges, I can only exclaim in the best traditions: "Long live our court, the most humane court in the world!" I hope you do not connect me. But, seriously speaking, this court is a great honor, I am grateful that I was invited to the anniversary meeting of The Art Newspaper. And, probably, it's an honor - to express here their amateurish ideas, why art is needed. And I will tell you, I gladly agreed, because there is nothing more pleasant than talking about what you, in general, know little about. This is much easier than to say what literature is, why it is needed. I probably would not be able to, because I have been doing this all my life. And the art - well, now I'm going to start singing a nightingale, I apologize in advance for those banalities that I probably will say.

In recent years, scientists have explored and changed the boundaries between the human and animal kingdom, between living and inanimate nature. And the more they study, the more unsteady is this border and, in fact, the exclusivity of the person himself. It turns out that starting from the language, organization of life, many behavioral practices and up to the intellect, which is also among animals, the allocation of a person from the natural world becomes more and more illusive.

But the last thing that raises us above nature is, of course, art and culture. Still, if religious people say that we are created by God in God's image, then probably we are like God more than anything that we can create, we create a certain reality - cultural values - and thus we move forward. And already many clever people long before me spoke about the fact that civilization is not at all an improved weapon of death, it's not even GDP per capita. Civilization is a memory, it is a culture dissolved in life that has become a habitat.

This was thought much during the Soviet era, when culture was simply a way of survival and preservation of human dignity. And survived in the most terrible conditions are people who are somehow associated with creativity - and with art in the first place.

I think a big problem in our country - with all our deep respect for culture - is that until recently art was not very accessible to a huge number of people. While the need for it is colossal. And it seems to me very fruitful the process of democratization, which is now taking place in our contemporary art (albeit belatedly in relation to the rest of the world). It is very important for me that art goes out to the streets, to people, it is engaged in aestheticizing the environment, which is especially important for our country, because we lived for many years in the aesthetics of ugliness.

Of course, there is a drama between the permitted art and the illicit. What counts as a slap in the face of public taste, and what is sacred - these problems never disappeared, and they are even worse now. But to me, as a person who lived in Soviet times and always felt this watershed between the beautiful that leads us to museums, and the monstrous that we see around us, it is very important for me that this face is erased.

And despite our difficult times, for a new escalation of hatred of contemporary art, I think that despite everything, we are moving in the right direction. Art is necessary for man no less than food and drink. Without access to art, there is no way to change, transform your existence, and to feel yourself as a person.

Vladimir Pozner: Do not you think that art is elitist, that its perception requires preparation? What, with rare exception of especially gifted, the overwhelming majority does not understand it? Therefore, your thesis that there is no man without art, is this an exaggeration?

Irina Prokhorova: It does not seem so. We are in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. When you go out into the city, you see this divine architecture, and this is also the introduction of people to art. Just moving around the streets of St. Petersburg, people are saturated with the idea of beauty.

I do not like the word "elite". I will give one example. In a small fishing village decided to make an annual festival of poetry. Modern poetry is a rather complicated thing, not very clear to everyone, especially to fishermen. And after 5-7 years, as they regularly read poetry, fishermen became connoisseurs of modern poetry and began to understand where good poetry, where bad. It's about training. How to learn to read and write, so learn and art and its different languages. Do we really think that classical art is more understandable to us initially?

Vladimir Pozner: Do not you think that these fishermen who have become so familiar with modern poetry have ceased to be good fishermen?

Irina Prokhorova: I do not think so. I do not understand how one can interfere with another.

Vladimir Pozner: I would like to ask you the last question, regarding this city and the people who inhabit it. Perhaps, many will take offense at me, but I'm a prosecutor and I can put forward that accusation, which I think is right. The beauty of this city, absolutely undeniable and unique, has little effect on its inhabitants, who are among the most aggressive, the most intolerant, the most undemocratic. So there is a complete discrepancy here?

Irina Prokhorova: You will now be torn! (Laughter.) Seriously, we are talking about intolerance, meaning what we are shown on TV. And there is another, intimate, or something, feeling. When I began to come to Leningrad a long time ago, it immediately caught my eye that the Leningraders were much more polite than Muscovites. Yes, much has changed and "come in large numbers here" - but there still remains some spirit of the city, which has its own destiny. And I think that all the same this architecture creates some kind of special identity for the citizens of St. Petersburg. Beauty, if it does not save the world, makes it much more peaceful.

Vladimir Posner: I thank you for your testimony. Mr. Garrett Johnston, please.

Garrett Johnston: I want to talk about what art is for, from different and even slightly overlapping points of view. I will speak as a businessman, because I am the representative of the world of money, about which Anna spoke at the very beginning. Then I would like to mention the importance of art in the fate of Russia. I will speak like a foreigner who has not lived in this country for the first time, but has kept a fresh look at the newly arrived person.

If we talk about what art is for, we must first understand what it is. I have my own definition of what art is. Art is a fitness training for the human mind. This is what a person changes, and what changes a person. Art refers to things that are not utilitarian in nature. Art pushes a person closer to self-realization, transfers from the concept of basic needs to the notion of social heritage.

As a person of business, every day I work with rich investors and entrepreneurs and tell them that the key to success is finding unique things, and the key to finding unique things is to encourage your people to communicate freely with themselves and between themselves By yourself. That is, in order for people to be creatively approaching business, one must stop thinking in the narrow limitations of the immediate, and start thinking about the opportunities to develop business in completely new and different directions. You need free thinking. For example, to understand what the client might need, but not for the clients to bring more profit to us, but for the client to become more successful for himself. How to create a successful customer?

Today, humanity is very, very far from self-realization. 88% of Germans say that they do not want to go to work on Monday, because born doctors work as locksmiths, and natural physicians are physicians. That is, we live in a world of round sticks and square holes. There is a huge discrepancy between the potential of humanity and what it really is. Therefore, art is very important as a way of overcoming this discrepancy.

That is, when I meet artists, I watch them, see how they are taught. How are they different from the businessmen I work with every day? They are more free to communicate with themselves, they are closer to self-actualization than those businessmen who may have 35 thousand talents, and they do not know about them, are shaded in the framework of today. I see art as a catalyst for the flowering of human potential on a mass scale. If business schools taught marketers and financiers just as academies teach artists, we would have lived much more advanced. Anne would not have to say that people of money use art. She would say that people of money help people of art who help people with money, that we live among such positive circles of mutual influence.

In 1815, there was a battle at Waterloo. News of the results of this battle between the British and the French reached the capitals - London and Paris - in 48 hours. And since this was the first war financed on the basis of the issue of state treasury bonds, a lot of financial investments and deals depended on its outcome. Therefore, Napoleon needed a system for the rapid transfer of information, and Claude Chapp invented a system of optical semaphores. And the news began to reach Paris in 20 minutes. It was a revolutionary invention. Why am I talking about this? 100 years before Napoleon realized the importance of the information system, the city in which we are now was conceived not just as a transit point for goods and an administrative center, but as a place for the exchange of ideas and concepts. That is, it was the first product of the information era, which did not yet come. Let me say that the Russian is a person who comes up with answers to questions that no one has asked. Therefore, Russia is the most suitable country to start teaching young Russian girls and men to freely communicate with themselves and understand where their potential is.

And about the evolution of the world economy. We can say that the world economy is divided into hemispheres. There is a hemisphere of ideas, concepts, innovations, creativity. There is a hemisphere of execution of all this: production, management, scalability. When I was in business school in 1995, our professor said: "The progress of humanity is 99% of execution and 1% of ideas. Ideas do not solve anything. " I want to tell you that this is no longer the case, because different innovations have significantly reduced the cost of performance. I lived in China and adored it, but I must say: this is the country where the performance is from God. And creativity in China is not very. In Singapore, too. All Chinese cultures are struggling with the fact that there are no original ideas. In Russia, this is exactly the opposite. There is creativity from God, but execution is through the letter "g". But you can buy good performance, but you can not buy creativity yet. So art is important everywhere, in Russia it is all the more important.

Vladimir Pozner: You said that art differs from everything else in that it is not utilitarian. Well, are these beautiful houses built in Petersburg, they are not utilitarian first of all, and only then are they beautiful? They were built not to admire them, but to live in them.

Garrett Johnston: I agree that utilitarianism is a subjective thing. What is utilitarian for me can be a luxury for you. Or vice versa.

Vladimir Pozner: I want to ask you as a person of business, as you said about yourself. To what extent is business destructive to art, and to what extent, on the contrary, creative?

Garrett Johnston: I, honestly, do not see where or how business destroys art. Anna said that money went into art, it became an investment object. But it's good. And if this is an incentive to be an artist, and not go to work as a doctor, this is also good. I do not see any harm here.

Vladimir Pozner: And do you see the benefit?

Aleksey Uchitel: You know, I have never heard that a man who is condemned and invited to court said thank you. Nevertheless, thank you very much for inviting me. I will try to defend myself, especially the chief prosecutor today mentioned Clara Zetkin, a Marxist. And the most important Marxist, whose name is Lenin, once, as we know, said that the most important of the arts is cinema. This is not quite as we know, it's taken out of context, but nonetheless. I'm certainly not a theorist, but a practitioner, and I, of course, worry about so many things, primarily related to the cinema and even to the theater.

We often talk about censorship, which affects the end result in literature, in cinema, in the theater. And I will never forget how many years ago, after the institute, I shot my first film, it was called "Novgorod's Name", it was a 10-minute view without a single word and was intended for such a series "For the USSR", which was shown abroad basically.

And I handed it over to the State Committee of the USSR, of course, and there they told me: "Did you show your picture (because I worked in Leningrad) in the Leningrad Regional Party Committee?" So I was forced to show it to the first secretary of the regional committee of the CPSU, I repeat that I was A film without a single word, without a single portrait of our leaders. After that, I stopped directorial activity for 3 years and worked as an operator, because it had a shocking effect on me. But I at least understand this, when art restricts power.

But now there was another. I recently went to Riga for a wonderful performance by Alvis Hermanis "Baryshnikov and Brodsky." This is a mono-performance, where one actor, Baryshnikov, reads Brodsky's poems. Alvis Hermanis is a terrific director, but when the story happened to the Crimea, he canceled the tour of his theater, almost annual, in St. Petersburg and Moscow, canceled his production at the Bolshoi Theater. Recently at the premiere of his same opera "The Condemnation of Faust" in Paris he was booed, and very harshly. For the fact that on the eve he published an astonishing letter, humanly piercing, where he refuses to work in a theater in Hamburg, because he condemns Germany's policy towards emigrants and that this theater provides humanitarian assistance to emigrants. Because he is afraid - including for his seven children, this fact is also very amazing for the director. And for this the French booed him. It is surprising to me why, for this reason, we must lose the talented performance for sure, not to see it?

Again, more recently, we launched a debut film in which one very famous young Russian actor was to be shot. This picture was to be filmed in Israel and Palestine. He came to me and said: "I refuse to go." - "Why?" - "I'm afraid." We invited another, no less talented actor, also a young one - who also said: "I'm afraid." Again we are faced with the fact that we lose artistic result.

If what is happening in the world continues, we can lose amazing and unique things.

Vladimir Pozner: Do you still agree with the ancient Roman saying that Ars longa, vita brevis?

Alexei Teacher: I agree.

Vladimir Pozner: Then what you do is not art, right? Because the movie is becoming obsolete at an incredible speed?

Alexei Uchitel: It is, of course. There is still such a thing as a newsreel. And I recently watched the first shots filmed in Russia, it was in 1896, at the invitation of Nicholas II, the French operators shot the coronation.

Vladimir Pozner: But this has nothing to do with art. This is a document, it's just a historical, incredibly interesting evidence of some time.

Alexei Uchitel: I hate it when they say that there is a documentary, but there is a feature film. Because both the feature film and the documentary must be artistic. The director Pupkin can mount, and it will be uninteresting, and in 5 minutes it will be forgotten. And there is a film by Sokurov that can be watched after 20, and I do not know how many years. Although in the cinema 90, probably, the percent does not stand this aging, then you are right.

Vladimir Posner: Very well. I just want to say that the figures of money collection in cinemas and the number of people visiting cinemas are several orders of magnitude higher than the figures of how many people visit theaters. And in this sense the theater is also elitist compared to the cinema. This is simply confirmed by numbers. I give you the last opportunity that can save you, or even drown you. Why do you need art, from your point of view, since you are doing it?

Aleksey Uchitel: I'm convinced just one hundred percent that if art is not widely perceived by the audience ... Can I tell you almost anecdote? The Cannes Festival, a full hall of the people, starts watching, the director is sitting, very pleased, at the end of the film he gets up, sees an empty room and says: "I liked it." I am against such art.

Vladimir Pozner: I would tell another anecdote about the perception of art. Two pickpockets went to the Conservatory at the Richter concert. We came to work, the people go there secured. The concert ended, and one says to the other: "Did you see what kind of hands he had?" - "Yes." - "And what nonsense does it!" Tatyana Vladimirovna, I ask you.

Tatyana Chernigovskaya: You and your dagger, when you turned it instead of eating fruit, did so that I have to speak after a very humanitarian speech. While the scope of my activities are both in the humanitarian field, and in the natural sciences.

And I'll start with provocation, including your, your honor, address. A few years ago I was at an international semiotic congress, there was one report, the title of which I will never forget. And it was this: "Why dogs do not go to museums." This is actually a very serious issue, because why, in fact, they do not go there? There is a floor where they can walk, there is air that they can breathe, they have eyes, ears. For some reason they do not go to the philharmonic society either. That's why? This question brings us back to what Irina Prokhorova said, namely, that something in us, people, is special. And today I remember Brodsky twice. First time now. Brodsky said, about poetry, not about art in general, but it is entirely applicable: "Poetry is our specific goal". This is what I mean by that, as far as we know, nothing like none of our neighbors on the planet exists.

We live by no means among objects, things, mountains and rivers. We live in a world of ideas. I think that it is appropriate to mention Yuri Mikhailovich Lotman, with whom I had a lot of happiness to communicate, and this, of course, can not be forgotten. After all, the idea of Yuri Mikhailovich was such that art does not reflect life, but art creates life, it gives birth to life, and this is a fundamentally different story. Lotman, by the way, then said that before the Turgenev ladies appeared, there were no Turgenev ladies, before there were superfluous people, there were no superfluous people. At first it was necessary to write Rakhmetov, and after that all went to check the nails, how much they would stand there. Now Mr. Teacher now said that the whole thing is in the head. Yes, the whole thing is in the head, that's why dogs, as well as all other lovely animals, absolutely do not have to go to the Mariinsky Theater or to the museum, because we look with our eyes, but we see with the brain, we listen with our ears, and we hear the brain, and so on. On all sensor systems you can walk. You need a trained brain. I, by the way, speak about elitism.

It's not that there is a bad and good brain, but that the brain must be formed, otherwise it's useless to look at the "Black Square", on the "Red Square", listen to Schoenberg and so on. When Brodsky says that art is our "visionary goal", then I would like to emphasize here what kind of thing. Art is different, unlike science, which, for example, I am engaged in, another way of knowing the world and another way of describing the world. In general, another. You said, your honor, at first about food. I want to say that ordinary, general public believes that there are serious things - this is life, in the extreme case of technology, of science. And there is such an appendage, so to speak, a dessert: you can eat, or you can not eat, you can use different spoons, forks, tweezers and so on, or you can just grab with your hands. The question is who we want to be. If we are just owners of ears, noses, eyes and hands, then without this everything can be dispensed with.

But art does what - I again play along with you - what Proust did on the theme of memory. Proust opened - I wanted to say, the laws of memory, but this is too pathetic. He said about the memory of what modern science with all its technologies and huge capabilities is just picking up. Artists - in a broad sense, it does not matter what artists are - there are some tentacles with which they reveal things that can not be discovered with the help of science. More precisely, it is possible, but not for a long time. Impressionists discovered about sight. Not about sticks and cones, not about the structure of the eye, but about the vision. They discovered what, several decades later, sensory physiology opened up, which began to study how a person perceives complex visual objects. Therefore, again going back to Brodsky, this is something that others can not do. In order for me to see, hear, understand something, I must have a trained brain. We are born on this light with the same brain more or less (except genetics), an empty text on the neural network, which we all have. But we, each of us in due time, will appear before the Creator with a completely different neural network, and there will be written the text of our whole life, including food, Leonardo, lipsticks, skirts, books, wind, sun on a certain day - everything is written there. So do we want this text to be complex, or do we want it to be comics? Then the brain must be cooked.

By the way, I will also say a materialistic one, who is interested, I can give references to serious scientific articles. By the way, you also talked about fitness: art is fitness. Of course, if we lie on the couch and we lie on this couch for six months, then after that we will not know how to get up from it, not that how to walk. If the brain is not busy with hard work, then there is nothing to be surprised and offended. It will contain plain text, boring and simple text. The brain is improved from complex work, and art is a very difficult job for the brain, because it requires, I repeat, training and there are many nontrivial moves. This is how the neural network trains, that it physically improves. We know that both from own music making, and from listening to complex music, the neural network becomes qualitatively different, very complex processes go to the brain of a person who listens to music or plays it. Very complex processes occur when a person (who understands what he is doing, and not just his eyes are open) looks at a complex picture or painting. And the object itself, whether it is painting, sculpture, cinema or anything, it's not autonomous, it depends on what Tsvetaeva once said "reader-co-author." It depends on who is reading, who is listening, who is watching. This is a serious story. I recently just read one article in a very serious Western journal about what happens in the brain of a dancer. Very complex processes are underway. That is, do not think that art - it's some kind of light, pleasant additive that you can generally just dress, and you can - beautiful. It's not about this, it's not about "beautiful." This is another vision of the world, fundamentally different, not digital, if it is clear that I mean, these are not algorithms, it's gestalt, it's blurry, it's about what philosophy calls qualia, quality. Qualia is something that can not be described in any way, this is the first person experience, this is how I feel. Here we drink the same wine, you say: somehow sour, well, in vain are these notes. And I say: but in my opinion, these notes are right here, they are good ... No grammes, milligrams, spectra do not describe such things as cold, warm, pleasant, beautiful. Here science is powerless. Are defendants allowed to call witnesses?

Vladimir Pozner: It's true.

Tatyana Chernigovskaya: Here is my witness - Joseph Brodsky again. And he wrote wonderful words. If art is not what we are discussing now, "Telepaths, Buddhists, spiritualists, drugs, Freudians, neurologists, psychopaths will take over. Soul is tightened a big veil. They will unite all of them with a continuous spiral. Plot into a socket with ethyl-morality. Speech will be freed from the verb. " If we do not want this to happen to us, and it's already there ... (Applause in the hall.)

Vladimir Pozner: Applause did not embarrass me.

Tatiana Chernigovskaya: Who would doubt. We asked in the morning whether to torture.

Vladimir Pozner: I said yes. I want to ask you about this. In ancient times, well, during the Renaissance, let's say, very few people had access to what we call art. This already then should inspire the same level of pessimism that you have when you talk about today, given that now people have incomparably more opportunities to somehow come into contact with art?

Tatyana Chernigovskaya: This is a good question. In fact, I think that for a serious answer to your question you need to read, say, Gurevich, who wrote about the categories of medieval art. That is, you need to know how these people thought, and this is information that, with the help of tomographs, I'm so jokingly saying, is not extracted, but it is extracted from the very art that gives hope, or destroys it. Therefore, I have an answer ... almost no.

Irina Prokhorova: The frescoes were painted for nothing. This replaced the inability to read ...

Vladimir Pozner: I will remind everyone that the defendants' remarks are absolutely inadmissible. (Laughter in the hall.)

Tatyana Chernigovskaya: As for pessimism, I do not want to say trivial things. Yes, I am an alarmist and pessimist, and generally apocalyptic - I can see it directly from all sides. Because we played. In the artificial intelligence played, and still get from it, and generally all digital, we believe that you can weigh what you can touch, that you can count. And that's where we came. When they ruin Palmira, and when it happens ... I do not want to go out on any policy at all, but in this hall you can see by the faces that you have goose bumps almost every day on the back of what is happening. There was a threat to the whole civilization. I have been torturing for some time - yes, I also know how to do it - big mathematicians and serious musicians that's such a question. Now if we do finish the game and humanity disappears from the face of the Earth, there will simply be no one left, music and mathematics will remain? Of course, I'm not so simple as to have notes, scores and math books. I'm whirling this way. No music and formulas in the universe can fly. It's not that there's everything there already, but some lucky ones, Mozart - although I like this point of view artistically - then I'm born and remove from there, relatively speaking, the 40th symphony. But still it is unlikely. Therefore, if there is no one who reads, then there is no book. If there is no one who listens, then there is no music. And we are so insane, is it to destroy all this ?! This is the end. Therefore it seems to me that if we have any chances to survive, then - although I am a man of science, and not of art - they are in art.

Vladimir Pozner: Tell me, please, do you agree with the point of view and with the statement of Picasso that art is a lie that allows us to understand the truth?

Tatyana Chernigovskaya: I'm not sure that I like this formulation. And yes, I can say that people who have hallucinations are just as sure of their reality as we somehow believe in the reality of the world around us. And therefore it is useless to say: what your crazy neural network generates is a lie, but the truth is different. I would not discuss this in the categories "lie is not a lie".

Vladimir Pozner: That's good. Easy question. I'm here prepared and I read something, I usually do not do art professionally. So, art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Tatyana Chernigovskaya: Yes and no. Because you force others to see is if you are very fortunate and you were able to formulate what to see (not necessarily verbal). My little son once worked here, in the Hermitage, in a studio where nobody says to the children: this is a brilliant artist, and this is not. They somehow cook there, cook, and then, you see, it turned out. And this "look, it turned out" - this is on the topic "show to others." If you can do this, it's great.

Vladimir Posner: Thank you very much. Now I will take a decision, you are guilty, not guilty and how to punish you. I was asked to do this with all severity. But I would like to say two words before it happens. First. I believe that discussing the question of what art is for is empty. It is necessary, it is not necessary - it is and will be, while there are people. This is what comes out of us, from someone damp, someone brilliant, but that's part of us. Therefore, these arguments do not matter: you need, you do not need, who needs what, what you need. It's just self-expression. And therefore it is, it will be, while we are. I almost regret that, nevertheless, there was no question for me important: money and art. And in ancient times, they paid for art, and artists fulfilled orders - that Michelangelo, that any average artist. But today something happened. When you buy a picture of Picasso for $ 172 million, it seems to me that something is wrong. Shift, or something, representations.

And I can not help expressing the idea about the creative charge of the Russian man, about which Mr. Johnston spoke. You all, of course, read Leskov's Lefty. You remember that everyone was struck by an English engineer who made a mechanical flea. But we decided that our people would do even better, and left it to Levsey. He worked, then brought the flea back, but she does not jump. And the elders said: "What have you done, you bastard!" - "Well, I made her so." What is really incredibly difficult - shoe a flea. But only she stops jumping. But the achievement is remarkable. In this, too, there is some creativity. Judge, you have the floor.

Mikhail Piotrovsky: Thank you very much. Leaping fleas are very much forged.

I think my main task is to compare how our discussion relates to London. In my opinion, it was no worse. Although it is not quite the right thing to arrange trials over art in our country. We had courts over "Onegin", we had, not to the night, the people's trial of Brodsky. And I must say, it is in this city that all the most complex ideological clashes of the 20th century always take place. The trial of Brodsky was the most difficult ideological clash of our century, which revealed everything. The trial and prosecution of Akhmatova and Zoshchenko, and before that Kirov's murder, and everything else. In this city nothing is quiet, it's special. I think that the defendants behaved very well. No one confessed, no one made a reservation, did not stipulate his neighbors and friends.

The main thing that you all described very well is that the quality of life depends on the availability of art. Without good art, there is no good quality of life. And worse, too. It was perfectly said that we give answers to questions that no one asked, this is the meaning of art. This is a whole theory: we must meet needs that are not yet there. This is the cultural industry, this is what culture does. Therefore, the brain must be prepared, we need a complex person. And not only people, we go to the museum and cats, everything is fine with us.

Vladimir Pozner: One minute. I understand that you justify all?

Mikhail Piotrovsky: I - yes, I justify everyone, I think that all coped with the prosecutor.

Vladimir Pozner: Then I must somehow answer, say: "Shame!"?

Mikhail Piotrovsky: No, it's not.

Irina Prokhorova: To freedom with a clear conscience.

The Art Newspaper.

Ars longa, vita brevis?

Estiveram presentes Mikhail Piotrovsky, Vladimir Pozner, Inna Bazhenova, Anna Somers Cocks, Irina Prokhorova, Tatyana Chernigovskaya, Alexei Uchitel, Garrett Johnston.

E o segundo.

Aqui é o negócio no treinamento.

Vladimir Pozner: I obrigado por ler.

Ele veio até mim e disse: "Eu me recuso a ir."

Vladimir Pozner: Bem, bem.

E eu me lembro Brodsky duas vezes hoje.

By the way, eu vou dizê-lo, e materialista uma coisa, que estão interessados, eu posso dar referências a artigos científicos sérios. Aqui, a ciência é impotente.

E ele escreveu as palavras notáveis. Ele libertou a partir do verbo ". (Aplausos no corredor.)

Vladimir Pozner: Aplausos não me perturbaram.

Tatyana Chernigov: Quem duvidaria.

Tatyana Chernigov: Boa pergunta.

(Riso).

Vladimir Pozner: Muito obrigado. First. É simplesmente a auto-expressão.

Mikhail Piotrovsky: Muito obrigado.

Mikhail Piotrovsky: Nenhum.

Irina Prokhorova: On liberdade com a consciência limpa.
