National Museum celebrates 199 years of creation. --- Museu Nacional comemora 199 anos de criação.

In commemoration of the 199th anniversary of the creation of the National Museum - on June 6, 1818, in Quinta da Boa Vista, north of Rio de Janeiro - a special anniversary program was opened today (6) and will run until next Sunday (11).

Fossils and reproductions of animals and plants that existed in the Devonian period.
One of the stars of the show is the trilobite, which measures approximately five centimeters
and was one of the most developed at the time.

Exhibitions, workshops and guided tours are part of the activities that will allow visitors to take a trip through science, history and culture.

The program begins the official calendar of the institution's bicentenary celebrations, which will take place in 2018, said Cláudia Rodrigues Ferreira de Carvalho, director of the National Museum, linked to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

The activities are aimed at visitors of all ages. Tickets cost R $ 6 (whole) and R $ 3 (half). For children under 5 years and persons with disabilities, admission is free. On days 9, 10 and 11, entry will be open to all people.

Geological period

Highlight in programming, the permanent exhibition At the time when Brazil was sea: the world 400 million years ago, seen from the fossils of the National Museum collections was opened today (6) in the afternoon, focusing on the Devonian geological period, Situated in the time span between 420 million and 360 million years.

"In that period, approximately 50% of the Brazilian territory was under great shallow seas, on the continental plates. Much of Brazil, at that time, was sea, and life was proliferating in the marine environment. Marine invertebrates were the most abundant beings in the country, "said show curator Sandro Marcelo Scheffler, a professor in the Department of Geology and Paleontology at the National Museum.

The focus of the exhibition is on marine invertebrates and their more common and familiar groups, such as sea stars and snail shells, and stranger ones, such as the trilobites, which constitute an entire group of arthropods that went extinct for more than 200 million years.

At the exhibition, with about 80 samples of fossil invertebrates never exposed, visitors will be able to appreciate a reconstruction of 1 meter in length of a trilobite, whose species was originally between 5 and 10 centimeters. "For the public to be able to look at what this animal was like, unfamiliar to most people," said the curator.

Most of the marine invertebrate species were collected in Brazilian states such as Pará, Piauí, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná. They make up the collection of the National Museum, the oldest collection of the genre of South America.

"We have fossils from historical collections, such as the collection of the Geological Commission of the Empire, collected over 140 years ago, in the 19th century; Of the Caster Collection, which represents the largest repatriation process ever made of fossils in Brazil. A ton of fossils, collected in the 1940s by a professor at the University of Cincinnati in the United States, have returned to the National Museum and are now returning to Brazil for donation, "he said.

According to Sandro Scheffler, this is a good opportunity for visitors to know what Brazil was like in ancient times. "Just to get an idea, it was (a time) long before the dinosaurs came, almost 200 million years before the dinosaurs."

Friends of the Museum

Another exhibition inaugurated today (6), this time of a temporary nature, is Friends of The Museum: 80 years, which marks the trajectory of the Friends of the National Museum Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1937. "Maybe it is one of the oldest NGOs in Brazil and the first association of friends in the country, the first science house and the first museological institution in Brazil," said curator Débora de Oliveira Pires.

After an inconstant trajectory, the Association of Friends of the National Museum "reared, professionalized and expanded," Débora said.

The exhibition is divided into parts. One of them has a large central table, accessible at a height for children and wheelchair users, where visitors can interact, through touch on an interactive screen, with the entire collection of the museum. A skull of alligator (Melanosuchus niger), a species known for its deadly bite, was collected on the Guaporé River in Rondônia.

Marine life can be appreciated through the Living Coral Project, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of coral reefs.

The association currently has 70 members. Everyone volunteers to help raise funds for the museum. The entity tries to obtain funds from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to revitalize the National Museum and organize the bicentennial celebrations.

The exhibition will be available to the public until June 6, 2018, when it will give place to another exhibition, already within the schedule of the bicentenary.

Carnival

The School of Samba Imperatriz Leopoldinense officially launches tonight its plot for the next carnival, which will honor the 200 years of the National Museum. The solemnity will count on the presence of components and members of the battery of the green, white and gold school of Ramos, northern zone of Rio.

"This participation is a gift that the school also gives to the museum so that we can, in a way, be represented in one of the biggest popular festivals in Brazil," said Claudia Carvalho.

"We understand that to exalt such an institution through the parade of a samba school, is to rescue the national culture, is to show the value of the historical content of the collection of this museum, due to the influence of the Empress Leopoldina herself in the formation of the Museum National, "said the carnival of the Empress, Cahê Rodrigues.

Amigos do Museu

Prado Museum displays recently discovered portrait of Velázquez. --- Museu do Prado exibe retrato de Velázquez descoberto recentemente.

The Prado Museum in Madrid presented on Monday a portrait of King Felipe III, recently attributed to the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez and discovered by an American collector, who donated the work.

"I am very happy and very proud that my painting can be here in Madrid," said the collector, William B. Jordan, a specialist in Spanish painting.

The painting is a portrait of Philip III of Spain, who reigned from 1598 to 1621. It will be exhibited from Tuesday, along with other works, until 29 October.

According to the Madrid institution, the portrait, dated in 1627, was a study for another painting by Velázquez, "La expulsión de los moriscos", destroyed by a fire in the year 1734, before the construction of the Prado building.

The temporary exhibition includes pictures related to the portrait, one of Titian, in which Felipe III appears a child, and others who had been inspired by the Spanish painter to make his portrait.

Last December, William B. Jordan donated the portrait of Philip III to the institution "American Friends of the Prado Museum", which in turn transferred him to the Prado, to be displayed in his permanent collection.

The American collector discovered the painting in 1988 with the name of "Retrato de un hombre" at an auction in London. At the time the painting was attributed to another painter.

After its restoration and study, William B. Jordan formulated the hypothesis that it could be of the master of Seville. The Prado confirmed the theory after analyzing the picture and comparing it with other Velázquez works.

Currently, there are 120 paintings by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), most of them in the Prado Museum. Among them, the famous "Girls".

Le Havre, musée à ciel ouvert --- The Havre, open air museum.

The Havre, open air museum.

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the city, Jean Blaise sowed installations created by contemporary artists in the streets, beaches and monuments.

The municipality, led by Édouard Philippe until his appointment as prime minister, hopes to attract holidaymakers and revitalize the image of the port city.

Built between 1951 and 1957 by Auguste Perret's workshop and listed as a historic monument in 1965, the Saint-Joseph Church dominates the city as a spiritual lighthouse. For the last few weeks, a spectacular volute of twenty-five meters high floats in the nave, as if sucked by the octagonal bell-tower looking like science fiction.

The vermilion color of the whirling spiral echoes the fauve and bronze spots projected by the stained-glass windows on the raw concrete pillars. The work of the Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota (whose weaving has mobilized 391 km of wool and 14 people for twelve days!) Is one of the most successful installations of the choir. 'A summer in Le Havre'.

To make forget "Stalingrad-sur-Mer"

It marks two of the four courses imagined by the artistic director Jean Blaise to celebrate the 500 years of Le Havre. "The mission of the artists was to reveal and wake up a city that suffers from many misunderstandings. This port and industrial city is often reduced to its factory chimneys and its concrete city center which has long earned it the nickname of Stalingrad-sur-Mer, "explains Jean Blaise. Convinced that art can revitalize a territory, this sexagenarian trublion has been working for nearly thirty years in Nantes where his cultural manifestations seduce an ever wider audience.

"Making Le Havre a tourist destination was not won," admits the first deputy mayor, Jean-Baptiste Gastinne. But the inscription of the Perret constructions on Unesco's humanity has changed the situation: it now welcomes one million visitors each year and it is hoped to reach two million by 2017. The next challenge is to make them stay longer A weekend. "

Colors and winks to the history of the city

With a budget of twenty million euros, "A summer in Le Havre" is part of a global movement of the city which, over the past ten years, has carefully rehabilitated its docks and developed its wharves for walking and hiking. Hobbies.

Some of the works created for the event will be perennial, like Impact, the double water jet installed by Stéphane Thidet on the commercial basin, or multicolored container arches erected by plastic artist Vincent Ganivet on the Southampton wharf . Wink at the vocation of the city, the first French port for foreign trade, they evoke a Lego abandoned there by a facetious giant.

Farther on, on the beach where the traditionally white huts have been decorated with bright colors by the graphic artist Karel Martens, it is an elegant architectural structure, signed Lang & amp; Baumann, who seems to have escaped from the city to take a sea bath and offer a little shade to the summer visitors.

"Le Havrais has a rebellious spirit"

From the very kits retrospective of the artists Pierre and Gilles to the MuMa until the disembarkation of the giants of Royal de Luxe (early July), the playful and festive tone of the program seems to make us forget the dark part of the city, literally built on The ruins of war. In a more historic vein, a handful of exhibitions celebrate the great figures (Francois I, Admiral de Graville ...) or the passage of the luxury liners of the French Lines whose beautiful nocturnal scenography by Aurélien Bory drag models as By magic (floating cities, in a granary of the docks).

Against all odds, the most complete portrait of Le Havre is painted with a sound installation, Les Passagers du son. Mingling intimate memories, fleeting impressions with the sounds of the harbor and electro-enchanting music, Charlotte Roux, the daughter of a long-time captain who has become a producer at France Culture, gives the floor to locals, dockworkers, teachers and boxers. The latter asserted: "The Havrais has a rebellious spirit, he does not like conventions. Resolutely off the beaten track of the commemoration, "A summer in Le Havre" is a striking proof of this.
