The Novgorod Museum-Reserve has acquired unique historical photographs.

Moscow House of Russian Abroad. A. Solzhenitsyn in the person of Deputy Director Igor Domnin gave the Novgorod Museum-Reserve five photographs of 1893. The showcases of the prerevolutionary Museum of Antiquities shown to them became a real discovery for the staff. Surprising is the very history of finding photos.

As it turned out, Igor Domnin had been to Valdai on business many times, but in Veliky Novgorod for many decades he visited for the first time, moreover with such an important mission. He also told about his personal participation in this story.

- In the process of collecting materials for our funds, we are confronted with the destinies of people and communities. One such meeting is the legacy of Boris Nikolsky, a public figure of the Russian diaspora, who lived and taught history in Geneva since 1921. I met his daughter Elizaveta Borisovna in 2008. She gave us her father's archive, it contained personal documents, notes, works, correspondence with people like Peter Struve or Anton Kartashov. And on one of my visits to Geneva, she showed pictures found in one of the books. "It would be right if you would transfer them to Novgorod on occasion," she said. For a long time my working ways passed by your city. But now everything has taken place. I am happy to be involved in this mission, which I regard not as my own, but at the House of the Russian Abroad and, to a greater extent, the Nikolskie family, who have not lost what has fallen into their hands.

Of course, it is no longer possible to trace the path of photographs from Novgorod to the Nikolskaya apartment in Kiev. Probably, they fell into the hands of Boris Nikolsky due to his extensive social activities. And now they have returned to where they were made, presenting new topics for researchers.

"The photos we received will allow us to restore the lost chains," says Yulia Kolomytseva, deputy director general of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve. - They reflect not someone's family history, but the history of the Novgorod Museum and the Russian state.

As is known, many museum antiquities were lost during the war, as well as documents shedding light on their history. The newest chronicle has been in existence since 1952, and only such discoveries as these photographs help researchers "recall" the museum history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first discoveries did not take long.

- In one of the photos we see how two eucharistic coverslips are exhibited, - says Elena Ignashina, a senior scientific employee of the museum. - Both items in pre-revolutionary catalogs appear as originating from the Goritsky Monastery on the Sheksna River. The monastery itself was founded in 1544 by Euphrosyneia Staritskaya, and later a gold embroidery workshop appeared in it. He survived the Great Patriotic War of the two Chavers of the XVII century alone. The second one was known to us only from the catalog and the pro-issy. And now we have a unique opportunity to learn how he looked.

A good quality of photographs, allowing to see the lost antiquities, said the expert of the Novgorod Museum Natalia Gormina.

- By the time the photographs were taken, the Novgorod museum numbered almost 2,000 items, a separate building was built for it. I was touched by the reverse side, filled with the hand of the custodians. This is also part of the museum's history. In the photographs I was able to see the chalice that is now in our fund. But we do not have a nearby object for consecrated gifts, and this is all the more interesting for researchers. The emergence of such a historical source for our documentary fund is extremely important.

Despite the fact that there are only five photos, they have already opened to researchers a huge potential for discovery. Interest to him shows the custodians of various funds. Also a wonderful gift for museum art historians and researchers of military history were the editions of the House of Russian Abroad.

Hunting Floor: the Pavilion of Brazil at the 57th Venice Biennial. Cinthia Marcelle's installation represents Brazil in the Italian show. From May 13 to November 26.

The Biennial Foundation of São Paulo announces that the Brazilian participation in the 57th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, in 2017, consists of the installation "Hunting Ground", developed by the artist Cinthia Marcelle (Belo Horizonte, 1974), especially Commissioned for the Pavilion of Brazil, curated by Jochen Volz.

At Marcelle's installation, a sloping floor, made of welded grids, occupies the interior of the two connected galleries that make up the Brazilian Pavilion. Common pebbles, like those around, in the Giardini, squeeze themselves into the gaps of the grating. It is then recognized the type of floor, usually used in industrial settings or public spaces, such as railroad tracks or to cover subway ventilation wells or sewage systems. Intertwined in the gratings and stones are other sculptural elements, a series of paintings and a video.

Several wooden rods were attached to the floor structure, each balancing a fabric painting at the top end, like a group of ghosts or a small forest of signs, lanterns or even totems. The support of the paintings are strips of cotton striped in black and white, common sheets, and each of the black bands has been carefully erased with white paint. Stones of various sizes encased by shoelaces become part of the larger structure, giving it sculptural weight and volume.

There is also a video: a single angle socket for the roof, gradually dismantled by men creating an opening wide enough for them to scale and decoy. In the play, made in partnership with filmmaker Tiago Mata Machado, the vibrantly colored uniforms suggest that these men are prisoners preparing for an escape or protest, recalling decades of prison rebellions worldwide, from Bangkok, Glasgow, Milan , Sri Lanka and Sydney, to name but a few, the terrible massacres in Brazilian penitentiaries in recent months. Of course, Marcelle and Machado's film does not comment directly on any of these events, much less illustrates the actual condition of incarceration.

"Marcelle plays with ambiguity, creates an enigmatic environment, guided by suspension, obsession, rebellion. The installation as a whole causes a certain sensation of instability, "Volz suggests. "Even if we are seduced to cling to the image of imprisonment and flight or rebellion, suggested by video projection and reverberated by the roughness of steel grids, it is also possible to imagine that we are in a peculiar laboratory or in the studio of an artist in A techno forest or in the midst of the savagery of a great big city. "

About Cinthia Marcelle

Since the early 2000s, Cinthia Marcelle has been building her work using a variety of media ranging from installation to sculpture, photography and video to performance. The artist works with the invention of images and seeks to draw poetic and powerful scenes with the elements she records and with the materials she uses. Often, it expressly seeks to create circumstances or model configurations in order to verify things and situations.

Starting from curiosity, his ideas and thoughts become experiments, which in turn translate into images. His work is a statement that art is all about questioning. Answers are given only and to the extent that they are necessary to stimulate new questions. Always marked by a degree of absurdity, Marcelle's works seem to derive their power from reflecting the artist's journey through life and her desire to understand and experience the relationships between the self and the world.

Cinthia Marcelle has participated in individual projects in South America and Europe and recently was commissioned by Projects 105 to present Education for the Stone, a new site-specific for the Duplex Gallery of MoMA PS1 in New York (2016). He also participated in the 11th Sharjah Biennial (2015) with At the Risk of the Real and presented his installation Dust Never Sleeps at Secession in Vienna (2014). In 2006, she received the International Prize for Performance for her work Gray Demonstration and in 2010 was awarded the first edition of the Future Generation Prize.

About the Brazilian participation in the 57th Venice Biennial

The pavilion of Brazil, built in 1964, is the space in which the country itself chooses and exposes artists that each new edition represents it. Since 1995, the responsibility for this choice has been granted by the Brazilian government to the Bienal de São Paulo Foundation, the second oldest of its kind in the world. From the same date, the Brazilian participation in the event is organized in a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - maintainer of the Brazilian pavilion -, the Ministry of Culture - through resources from the National Arts Foundation (Funarte) - and The São Paulo Biennial Foundation - responsible for selecting the curator and producing the exhibitions.

Grenfell Tower mural honours victims with words from powerful Ben Okri poem.

Ben Eine's mural appears in Shoreditch one month on from the tragedy.

A London street artist has created a new mural to honour the victims and survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Ben Eine has painted words from Ben Okri’s poem ‘Grenfell Tower, June 2017’, which was written in the days after the fire. The line ‘You saw it in the tears of those who survived’ appears in large writing, with the full 1,600 word poem appearing as the mural’s background.

The mural, which marks the one-month anniversary of the atrocity, is part of a social justice art project called Paint the Change. It was founded by journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari, who wants to start dialogue about urgent social issues through the arts. The Grenfell mural, which has been painted at Village Underground in Shoreditch, is the project’s first artwork.

Bahari says the mural is “our attempt to share Ben’s poem with the rest of the world.”

“I couldn’t stop crying when I saw that Ben Okri had said it all in his beautiful poem,” he said. “I repeated one line for days: ‘You heard it in the cries in the air howling for justice’.”

Okri, who won the Booker Prize in 1991, said that the mural is “an extraordinary idea.”

“Anything that can draw attention to that outrage to humanity, anything that can commemorate the dead and help the survivors has my support,” he said.

Eine, whose work was presented as a gift to Barack Obama by David Cameron on 2010, said that he hopes the mural “will help keep this discussion alive and bring the victims and survivors out of the shadows so that they can receive justice.”
