(cath.ch/com/orj/be).

Berlin exhibits at the Pergamon Museum the diversity of Christian traditions in the Middle East.

The Museum of Pergamonmuseum (Pergamonmuseum) on the Museum Island, in the center of Berlin, presents until 15th October a rich exhibition that reflects the diversity of Christian traditions in the Middle East, from Late Antiquity to the 19th century.

This region, which was the cradle of Christianity, now largely Muslim, is empty of its Christians because of armed conflicts and an increasingly intolerant Islamic fundamentalism.

Reception of Biblical themes in the Islamic tradition

Titled "Testimonies of Faith, Biblical Traditions in the Islamic World", this exhibition shows the splendid Armenian Gospels, as well as Syrian bibles on parchment, Coptic papyri and testimonies from many other languages in the region. It also presents examples of receiving biblical themes in the Islamic tradition.

Indian miniatures featuring Christian motifs from the Vollmer Collection complete the exhibition. The Museum of Archeology in Berlin, with its collection of antiques, a Middle East department and a museum of Islamic art, features some forty old manuscripts, illustrated Gospels, Bibles and breviaries.

The Aleppo Room

The event is organized around Aleppo's house, which belonged to a house in Aleppo, Syria, owned by a wealthy Christian merchant, who decorated his state hall at the beginning of the 17th century with themes Taken from the Old and New Testaments. There is a representation of the Virgin and Child, alongside hunting scenes such as are found in the Persian illumination. The quotations from the psalms, the Arabic proverbs and the Persian formulas that run along the panels are also chosen to evoke the peaceful coexistence of men of different religions.

The exhibits belong to the collection of the Berlin National Library and Museums. The works are in Aramaic, Armenian, Coptic, Arabic and Persian.

Each Christian community (Maronite, Syriac, Melkite, Assyrian, Coptic, Armenian, Nubian and Ethiopian) is represented by a book, a painting and, above all, a story and explanations for people who know little or no Christians in the East. Thus, the exhibition presents to visitors the two natures of Christ who created a schism within the Church. It also mentions the communities attached to the Vatican and their peculiarities in relation to other Catholics, and enumerates some prerogatives of a patriarch, notes Patricia Khoder, in the Lebanese-French daily newspaper L'Orient-Le Jour. |

Gospels in Arabic

Many books and images come from Edessa, the current Ourfa, Amida, the present Diyarbakir, Turkish Kurdistan, Tur Abdin (in Syriac Mountain of the Servants of God), three towns in the southeast Of present-day Turkey, and of Constantinople. The old Gospels in Armenian and Syriac are illustrated with magnificent images, such as the adoration of the Magi, the descent of the cross or Pentecost. An important part of the exhibition is devoted to Egypt and the Coptic Church.

Among the manuscripts presented is an Epistle of St. Paul in the Coptic language with a translation on the same page in Arabic, dating from the beginning of the 18th century, as well as a new testament in papyrus dating from the 4th century. Works in the Arabic language, including the Maronite Gospels, are also on display. In addition, there is also a Genesis in Persian language, illustrated with an expulsion from Paradise, from the city of Shiraz, Iran. (Cath.ch/com/orj/be).

(Cath.ch/com/orj/be).
