Riga to host an exhibition of calligraphy and ebru from Turkish masters.

It will be the first time that an exhibition of calligraphy and ebru, or marbled paper, from masters of contemporary art from Konya and Istanbul (Turkey) will be held in Latvia.

The exhibition offers an opportunity for everyone interested to get to know the rare form of calligraphy art called Husni Hatt (the beauty of writing), considered in Turkey the supreme form of art.

The seeming smoothness and simplicity of lines in Husni Hatt in fact means endless patience and many years of practice, with the calligraphers honing the precision of their hand movement to pinpoint accuracy.

Authors of the 28 exhibited works are expected to be present at the opening ceremony. Two workshops on calligraphy and ebru will be held within the exhibition framework.

The bitter struggle of the Alpine Museum. - L’âpre combat du Musée alpin. - A amarga luta do Museu Alpino.

Shocked by a substantial reduction in the federal subsidy, the Bernese Museum, which celebrates mountain Switzerland, organizes resistance. The institution "is threatened in its existence," warns its director, Beat Hächler.

There are days when the bureaucracy is at the height of cynicism. This was what Beat Hächler, the director of the Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern, must have felt when receiving a letter from the Federal Office of Culture (OFC) on 18 June. Firstly, OFC is pleased to inform it that it has retained its museum among the thirteen which will receive a federal grant for the period from 2018 to 2022. Except that in the following paragraph it specifies that This subsidy will be reduced from one million to 250,000 francs a year from 2019. "Our museum is threatened in its existence", warns its director.

Captivating exhibitions

Beat Hächler took over the reins of the Alpine Museum in 2011, a pivotal year in its history. Thanks to a strong mobilization of elected representatives of the Alpine cantons in the Federal Chambers, its supporters succeed in doubling its subsidy to reach the current one million. It is thanks to this decisive support that the Director can begin the modernization of the institution. It relegates the permanent collection to the cellar to create captivating and even disconcerting temporary exhibitions, which most often encounter a wide media echo. There was the very critical gaze of the Austrian photographer Lois Hechenblaikner on the excesses of alpine skiing; The history of the geranium, a plant from South Africa that has become a Swiss symbol, an exhibition that the Genevans will soon see at the Botanical Garden; And finally a large fresco on the mountain as it appears in a hundred Swiss films, signed by writer and writer Antoine Jaccoud.

These months, the Alpine Museum asks its visitors about their relationship to water, but also to the wolf. On a turntable, two stuffed animals: one represents the wicked and dangerous predator, the other the loyal animal of pack, beautiful and racy. The museum gives the floor to the actors concerned by this theme, then leaves the public to position itself, an approach that reveals a cleavage between town and country. At the entrance of the expo, a caricature recalling the universality of the debate, which touches on questions of migration and security: we see a Syrian refugee family crossing the wolf on the green border and asks: "You Are you also on the run? "

A museum of identity

"We are not a tourist museum. Our aim is to tackle identity themes that provoke a debate about the present and the future of Switzerland, "says Beat Hächler. Today, the Alpine Museum has an annual budget of 3 million francs, including one from the Confederation, 780,000 Swiss francs from the Canton of Berne and 90,000 Swiss francs from the City. Since his arrival, Beat Hächler has developed a double strategy. In Berne, the museum attracts some 30,000 visitors. But he also travels to the Alps by organizing three exhibitions in Mürren (BE), the Gornergrat (VS) and the summit of the Gotthard Pass (TI), which are visited by 50,000 to 70,000 visitors.

A amarga luta do Museu Alpino.

Ask the Expert: Hirshhorn’s Melissa Chiu. --- Pergunte a perita: Melissa Chiu de Hirshhorn.

The envelope-pushing museum
director’s take on art, travel and her adopted hometown.

It’s hard to miss Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Gordon Bunshaft’s modernist doughnut-shaped design stands out from the Smithsonian’s other traditional buildings along the National Mall. In front of the Hirshhorn, another attention-grabbing sight: a smiling boulder crushing a 1992 Dodge Spirit, Jimmie Durham’s whimsical 11,000-pound sculpture.

Credit for such head-turning acquisitions? Melissa Chiu, the museum’s executive director, who took the helm of the storied Smithsonian site in 2014. Since then, the Australian native has painted with a broad brush, bringing crowd-pleasing pieces like Durham’s but also Instagrammable immersive exhibitions by Icelandic performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson and Japanese pop artist Yayoi Kusama.

Chiu recently spoke with us about her job—arguably one of the coolest in D.C.— how she plans to top recent shows and what she loves about her adopted city.

What’s the best part about your job?

It’s my great privilege to be able to communicate through exhibitions, to create programs that give voice to the most innovative and compelling artists from around the world.

The Hirshhorn recently showed works by Ragnar Kjartansson and Yayoi Kusama, which were huge hits. How are you going to top those exhibitions?

I encourage everyone not to miss our exhibitions by Ai Weiwei, Yoko Ono, Markus Lüpertz and Nicolas Party. They are very different artists, but each asks profound questions about our history and culture. After that, just wait and see!

Khartansson’s and Kusama’s works seem to show you have a playful spirit. How do you decide which artists to exhibit?

We’re always interested in artists who have something to say about the times in which we live. Sometimes this can have a playful approach—sometimes it has an entirely different sentiment.

Who’s your favorite artist, living or dead, and why?

I actually don’t have favorites. With each artist I encounter, I look for an individuality that pushes them to create with such conviction.

How would you describe D.C.’s art scene?

It’s very much an art scene defined by museums, especially national art museums—the National Gallery of Art—East and West buildings—the Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, and of course the Hirshhorn, the national museum of modern art. But it also has this fascinating creative pulse that’s reflected in artist projects throughout the city.

As an Australian, what do you love about your adopted city, D.C.?

It’s a great place to live. The people are brilliant, and in the spring, there is no city more beautiful.

Can you recommend an off-the-beaten-path spot for great art in the city?

Transformer on P St. NW is an artist-run space, very much like where I started in Sydney. We collaborated with them to present a night of performance art on the Hirshhorn’s plaza, which was magical. Their gallery continues to surprise and delight.

Where are you going next, and what are you going to do there?

I’m going to Kassel, Germany, to see Documenta, a contemporary art exhibition that happens every five years and features experimental art.

If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow, where would you be?

Chiang Mai, Thailand
