"UBUNTU", WHAT AFRICA HAS TO TEACH US. - “UBUNTU”, O QUE A ÁFRICA TEM A NOS ENSINAR.

Ubuntu is a word existing in the Zulu and Xhosa languages, spoken in South Africa, which expresses a moral concept, a philosophy, a way of living that opposes narcissism and individualism so common in our neoliberal capitalist society. It can be an ecopolitical alternative for a social and planetary coexistence based on altruism, fraternity and collaboration among human beings.

The journalist and philosopher Lia Diskin during the World Peace Festival in Florianópolis in 2006 told the following case of a tribe in Africa:

An anthropologist was studying the customs and customs of the Ubuntu tribe, and when he finished his work he had to wait for the transportation that would take him to the airport back home. Since he still had a long time to go, he proposed a play for children he thought was harmless. He bought a lot of candy and goodies in the city, put it in a pretty basket with a ribbon bow and placed it under a tree. Then he called the children and agreed that when he said "Already!" They should run to the basket and the one who came first would get all the sweets inside.

The children positioned themselves on the demarcation line he drew on the floor and waited for the combined signal. When he said "Already!" Instantly all the children clapped their hands and ran toward the tree with the basket. Arriving there, they began distributing the sweets to each other and eating them happily. The anthropologist went to meet them and asked why they had all gone together if only one could keep everything in the basket and thus gain much more sweets.

They simply replied, "Unbuntu, Uncle. How could one of us be happy if all the others were sad? He was amazed. Months and months working on it, studying the tribe and still had not really understood the essence of that people. Or I would never have proposed a competition, right? Ubuntu means: "I am because we are" or, in other words "I only exist because we exist". "How could one of us be happy if all the others were sad?" The child's simple response is profound and vital because it is loaded with values such as respect, courtesy, solidarity, compassion, generosity, trust - in short, everything that makes humans and guarantees a harmonious coexistence in society.

Ubuntu expresses awareness of the relationship between the individual and the community. It is at the same time a moral concept, a philosophy and a way of living that opposes the narcissism and individualism so common in our Western capitalist society. While the European idea about human nature is based on the idea of freedom, that individuals have the power of free choice, the African idea of ubuntu rests on the idea of the community, that people depend on other people to be people. In the spirit of ubuntu, people should not take personal advantage to the detriment of group well-being.

For a person to be happy it will be necessary for everyone in the group to feel happy. We are connected with each other and this relationship extends to the ancestors and to those still to be born. Ubuntu is thus a system of beliefs, a collective ethic and a spiritual humanist philosophy based on altruism, fraternity and collaboration among human beings.

From the political point of view, the concept of ubuntu is used to emphasize the need for unity and consensus in decision making. It is the synthesis of a well-known Xhosa proverb from South Africa which reads as follows: "Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu", which means "A person is a person because of other people".

South African educator Dalene Swanson, a professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, speaks about ubuntu: Unlike western philosophy derived from Enlightenment rationalism, ubuntu does not place the individual at the center of a conception of being human.

This is all sense of ubuntu and African humanism. The person is only human through his belonging to a human collective; the humanity of a person is defined through his humanity towards others: (...) the value of his humanity is directly related to the way in which he actively supports the humanity and dignity of others; a person's humanity is defined by his ethical commitment to his sister and brother. Asked what aspects ubuntu could contribute to Western ethics, Dalene Swanson replied: We live in an age of deeply disturbing neoliberal economic globalization.

Our patterns of development have been hijacked by this economic model that presents itself as the "right" or only way to promote development. Molded by capitalist relations of production, this model is subsumed by materialism, individualism, and competition, and normalizes a rich elite over the deprived poor.

To maximize profits, it is thought that something has to be explored. (...) In ecological terms, it also includes the devastation of the environment in its wake. (...) Since the central tenet of ubuntu is mutual respect, it is in line with African epistemology in a more general way, which is circular in its understanding and, consequently, is more in ecological harmony with the Earth than epistemology of Western rationalism, which is linear, exploitative, and unsustainable. (...) Ubuntu, as a contribution to a native philosophy, is a living expression of an ecopolitical alternative.

In an increasingly vigilant world, the future of human (and ecological) rights, human dignity and the survival of our planet in broad terms depend on native philosophical and ideological notions such as ubuntu.
