The director of the naïve arts museum in Laval (Mayenne) does not play the candid. Antoinette Le Falher does not get carried away since she unpacked this apparently ordinary package found on her desk on her return from holiday: inside, a painting signed by the Douanier Rousseau (1844-1910), and a handwritten letter d an old gentleman who wanted to remain anonymous, who said: "I was disappointed by the fact that the museum has only three works by Henri Rousseau, a native of Laval. I am an elderly person and I have no heirs, so I decided to offer to your establishment the Landscape with fisherman. I hope that this donation will remain anonymous and that the Musée du Vieux-Château will be able to use this work as it pleases. " A Christmas tale in the summer.

In the middle, some find the story a bit too beautiful. The director remains cautious and waits for authentication but has "few doubts": "When I saw him, I said to myself right away: he is a Rousseau. The signature, the palette ... Of course, the forgers are very gifted, and one can quite easily imitate Rousseau, because he lacks technique. It would be a strange hoax. What interest, other than making fun of the city of Laval? "

"Paysage avec pêcheur" does not appear in the catalog raisonné of the works of the painter, supposed to keep track of everything, but this absence does not worry him: "Henri Rousseau, self-taught who lived very modestly, distributed many works, sometimes in payment, to merchants, gave to his neighbors ... Everything he has done has not necessarily been identified yet. "

A bargain for the museum

Antoinette Le Falher would like to find the donor, even without disclosing his identity, in order to obtain more information on the origin of the painting. Only the visitor to the museum saw this man of "a good sixty years" come to deposit in August this package containing the work, a handwritten letter, two labels of old galleries that had exposed the painting and one Certificate of Authenticity, dated 1995, signed by the expert Dora Vallier, recognized art historian, disappeared in 1997. Positive signs: still in 1995, she signed a certificate for another Rousseau, also passed by the same gallery in the 1930s before joining a private collection, put on sale in Drouot in 2014. A small format of the same type, which had found taker at 102 000 €. Far from the record of Rousseau auctioning more than 2.5 M € for a major masterpiece. But for a small museum, what a boon: "I do not know if this gentleman has other Douanier Rousseau, but he has targeted our needs with this landscape that will go very well with the three that we already have."

Many visitors, alerted by the local press, flock these days to the museum to see the painting, for the time being recorded on reserves. They will have to wait. "Landscape with fisherman" is preparing for a discreet tour of Paris. First at the Musée d'Orsay, to be presented informally to the specialists of the painter. Then at the Center for Research and Restoration of Museums in France (C2RMF), an ultra-technological analysis laboratory, which will be responsible for studying and authenticating it. These institutions which we have joined do not communicate, having not yet had the picture in the hands.

Rousseau: A Assinatura, a Paleta ...

Alessandro Farnese a papa Paolo III.

imagem 1

In 1530, work was started on the base of a pentagonal fortress with five corner ramparts, one of which would become the canopy at the apex of the pentagon, but in 1534 they were suspended following the papal investment of card. Alessandro Farnese to Pope Paul III.

first project of Palazzo Farnese, wanted by Card. Alessandro Farnsese the old, was entrusted to one of the most important architects of the time, Antonio da Sangallo the young man assisted by Baldassarre Peruzzi.

A few years later, the nephew of Paul III, card. Alessandro the young man retired to Caprarola to forget the killing of his father Pier Luigi (Duke of Castro, Parma and Piacenza), and the disadvantages that the family had to suffer caused in part by the rivalry of those nobles who had seen snatching the papacy and control over some strategic lands.

Alessandro Farnese immediately fell in love with Caprarola, a lovely haven near Rome, healthy and cool in the summer. He then thought of resuming his grandfather Paul III's dream and then called to his dependencies a new architect very much in vogue at that time, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola one of the greatest exponents of Mannerism who had done "beautiful things" in the Fontainebleau Palace in France .

In 1559, on the design of Vignola, they began the work of the most outstanding work of the Farnese, the most exclusive of Palazzo Farnese in Rome.

imagem 2

The most important painters, the most illustrious architects, worked the best of the best that at that time could be in the study of a great urban planning that saw not only the building of the palace but also the reconstruction of the urban core that rigorously it had to be adapted to the size and value of the Palace.

So today we can appreciate the complex architectural structure, the miraculous frescoes and the false images of doors, windows, curtains, marbles and statues in a succession of visual games to confuse the visitor, but also the wonders that are discovered from above.

imagem 3

The Palazzo Farnese
The palace was built on a pentagonal plan, on a base that had to accommodate a fortress, surrounded by a deep moat where today's large bastions are known.

Spaces were conceived according to well-defined criteria and needs, including division of environments into two zones: the summer to the north and the winter to the west. The stairs of the servitude were made in the thicknesses of the walls and they had no way of communicating with the environments where the cardinal's life took place.

The Interrats, whose access was permitted by the large square in front, opened the passage to the carriages. In this area there were also the kitchens, the warehouses and the services necessary for servitude.

The Carthago Scale was also connected here, which is hidden inside the walls to the roof, so called because, since it was helicoidal, a carved guide on its handrail made it possible to get a sandpaper filled from the top of the ladder or a pebble.

This allowed quick messages to come down in secrecy.

The Raised Plane

Above the basement is the Raised Plane, known as the Prelates, which is accessed from the inner staircase or from the outside, above the entrance of the basements. Already in this floor are the frescoed rooms of Taddeo Zuccari, such as the Seasons Rooms that tell the frescoes of Jupiter's events, whose outlook, conceived by the Vignola, expands the spaces into an unrealistic vision.

The Guard Room, however, was frescoed by Federico Zuccari after the death of his brother.

Through these environments you can reach the extraordinary courtyard designed by Vignola in circular form, consisting of two characteristic overlaid porches whose faces were masterly frescoed by Antonio Tempesta as well as the walls of the internal helix scale. This original interpretation came out of the rules of the time, as the staircase to reach the upper planes, which was usually built in the courtyard, was internally produced and represented the whole estuary of Vignola, so called Scala Regia.

A superb scale that rotates on thirty columns of pepper through which Cardinal could reach the bedrooms even on horseback.

Above the mezzanine floor was built the Noble Floor, divided into two apartments: that of the summer almost entirely freshened by Taddeo, and partly by Frederick, while that of the winter by Bertoja, by Raffaello from Reggio and by Giovanni De Vecchi.

Here is also the Cardinal's bedroom, also called Aurora's Room, and the famed Farnese Family Room, known as the Farnesian Fancy Room, which tells the story of the family from its ancestors in frescoes. On the same floor there is the Council Hall of Antiquity, where the attention is directed to the figure of Paul III and the Council of Trent.

In 1566 Taddeo and Annibal Caro died. Taddeo was replaced by his brother Federico, while Annibal Caro was replaced by Ottavio Panvinio and Fulvio Orsini. Federico frescoed part of the rooms on the noble floor and above all the refined Chapel where he demonstrated all the artistic maturity, while the elaborations of the floor were drawn by Vignola.

Following is the Sala di Ercole, designed by Annibal Caro with a large loggia. The valuable frescoes made by Federico relate to mythology and in particular to the legend of Hercules that originated in Lake Vico. This charming loggia overlooks the south, the square and the village cut off by the straight road and around immense panoramas.

Frederick's initial subjection to the Cardinal turned into an arrogant presumption after reaching a certain level of excellence and for this reason he was replaced by the cardinal with Giacomo Zanguidi, known as Bertoja, who worked in the Rooms of Penance, Judgments, that of the Dreams and that of the Angels. Other artists worked after the Bertoja, including Giovanni De Vecchi and Raffaellino da Reggio.

One of the most fascinating rooms is the room of the Geographic Cards, or the mappamondo, frescoed by Giovanni Antonio da Varese, probably with the collaboration of Raffaellino da Reggio and Giovanni De Vecchi. But the name of the painter who made the work was not known fascinating of the room, that is, the original representation of the Zodiac in the vault of the ceiling.

The Vignola died in 1573 and the work was completed in 1575 along with the fourth and fifth floors reserved for the coaches and riders.

Along with the wonderful Villa, the Farnese built a large park near the palace, with spectacular water games, waterfalls, sculptures and Italian gardens.

Outside the walls, the Stables were built to accommodate calves, carriages, barns and lodgings for workers.

With the construction of this grandiose work, realized in just 27 years, a series of works was started to adapt the urban layout to the architectural requirements of the Palazzo Farnese, breaking down some medieval buildings to build bridges and an unusual "straightway" rare example of sixteenth-century township that would pass through the town, from the foot of the village to the square of the Palace.

In the village, however, was realized the Church of S. Maria della Consolazione and the Church of S. Teresa.

imagem 1
