55 Brazilian products received the INPI geographical indication stamp, among which coffee, cheese, cachaça, fruits and, of handicraft, the eight products that the exhibition Feito Aqui presents.

Handicrafts from eight Brazilian regions that received the first geographic indication (GI) stamps from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) can be viewed free of charge by the public at the Feito Aqui exhibition, opened this week at the Sebrae Reference Center for Brazilian Crafts (Crab) , in Praça Tiradentes, central region of Rio de Janeiro. The show will remain open until November 18.

The coordinator of the Geographical Indications project of the Brazilian Service of Support to Micro and Small Businesses (National Sebrae), Hulda Giesbrecht, stressed that the geographical indication brings a differential and makes the product more competitive.

"The product receives the seal because it is produced according to a description, with a regulation of use. In addition to coming from that region, it has a specific quality that differentiates it from other products of the same nature that, sometimes, are also manufactured in the same region, "explained Hulda. By highlighting this quality, added Hulda, the geographical indication adds value, increases the competitiveness of the product and brings development to the region.

Selection

According to Hulda, the selection of craft products that could be protected by the GI seal was a natural move. The Sebrae released the concept of geographical indication, regions with representative products sought the body. "From then on, what we did was to apply a diagnosis to verify that the regions meet the criteria set by INPI," he said.

Identified the potential of the regions, the Sebrae guided the artisans about the process, teaching them to obtain the necessary documents, to collect evidence, to describe the products correctly and to measure their quality. "We help in this process until we take it to the INPI, which analyzes the documentation and does the recognition." Hulda stressed that other regions with typical crafts can request support from Sebrae to obtain the classification.

My Account

The show gathers handicrafts in golden grass from the Jalapão Region, in Tocantins, the first handicraft product to receive the INPI GI seal in August 2011; clay pottery from Goiabeiras (ES), the first cultural asset registered by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) as intangible heritage in 2002 and which won the INPI's GI stamp in October 2011, and tin pieces from São João del Rei (MG), that obtained the seal of IG in February of 2012.

The other products with geographic identification are precious opals and handmade jewels of Pedro II (PI), with seal obtained in April of 2012; colored cotton textiles from Campina Grande (PB), with a seal granted in October 2012; Irish income from the Divina Pastora region (SE), with certification awarded in December 2012; the Renaissance income of Cariri Paraibano (PB), which won the seal in September 2013, and embroidered fillet of the Mundaú-Manguaba Lagoon Region (AL), with a stamp obtained in April 2016.

Potential

According to Hulda Giesbrecht, Sebrae is evaluating other craft products in several states, such as Alagoas and Minas Gerais, to raise the potential and help in structuring the application for recognition as a GI. "Brazil has a great potential for crafts," he says. For the coordinator of the project, the big challenge today is to make the GI concept known by society and the market and spread throughout the country.

Hulda compared the work to what has occurred until recently with the certification of organic products. "People did not know what organic products were, what benefits they had from those products. Today, they have an increasing spread, even because they have the organic product seal. " Certification is evidence of the origin of this product for consumer purchase. Geographical indication, however, is a well-known concept in Europe, but still new in Brazil. "We are in the process of disseminating this concept so that people can know it," he says.
