Eyes put on the Portuguese state tomorrow in the auction of Sotheby's. Bid base value between 150 and 250 thousand dollars - Olhos postos no Estado português amanhã no leilão da Sotheby"s.

The Museum of Ancient Art asked the Ministry of Culture to buy The Annunciation, by Álvaro Pires de Évora. And now?

It is called The Annunciation, it was painted in 1434, and is 30.5 by 22 centimeters. "A small focus of light in a zone of almost absolute darkness" of Portuguese painting, says the curator of the Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA) and specialist in antique painting, Joaquim Caetano. "From my point of view, everything that is more than 50 thousand euros for this painting is an exaggeration," Pedro Dias, professor of art history at the University of Coimbra, retired, and 1994, the only major exhibition in Portugal dedicated to the one who, not being the first Portuguese painter, according to Dias, is the first to whom work can be attributed, explains Caetano: Álvaro Pires de Évora, who, despite having lived almost all his life in Italy, was born in Portugal in the early fifteenth century.

If tomorrow (fev-2-2018) the Portuguese State will fulfill the MNAA's request to the Ministry of Culture to buy the painting at the auction of Sotheby's in New York, with a bidding value between 150 and 250 thousand dollars (between 121 and 202 thousand euros ), this will not be the first time the work has arrived in the country of its creator. In 1994, the painting arrived in Lisbon under the arm of its owner, the Heinz Kisters family - who sold it to Konrad Adenauer, Germany's first chancellor And then recovered it from his heirs - for the exhibition Álvaro Pires de Évora: a Portuguese painter in Italy of the Quattrocento, curated by Pedro Dias, in the framework of the Commemorations of the Portuguese Discoveries.

The Annunciation will be, tomorrow (fev-2-2018) at 18.00 in New York (23.00 in mainland Portugal), the first lot of an auction that counts with Lucrécia, Cranach, Santa Margarida, Titian, or a landscape of Brueghel and a view of Venice from Canaletto, the latter with estimated values between three and four million dollars.

In 1994, as this work, Pedro Dias recalls, came others that were "in Italy or on Fifth Avenue, in New York, St. Petersburg, Germany, Switzerland." There were no others, such as the one that Joaquim Caetano points out as the "masterpiece": the altarpiece of the church of Santa Croce in Fossabanda of Pisa. Pedro Dias refers to this work as a "fundamental document" for what it includes in addition to its artistic value: "Álvaro Pires de Évora Pintou", signature of the painter who thus shows to be Portuguese and of whom, in 2001, the State bought by 64 thousand contos (320 thousand euros), The Virgin and Child between St. Bartholomew and St. Anthony, under the Annunciation, to the Museum of Évora, then directed by Joaquim Caetano. This is the only work in Portugal by Álvaro Pires, present in collections such as the Louvre Museum or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Giorgio Vasari, the great biographer of the Renaissance painters (a revolution that did not go through the work of the Portuguese painter), refers to him as Alvaro di Piero di Portogallo, when he writes about another artist.

Christopher Apostle, who heads Sotheby's former painting masters department, tells DN that "rarely" appears an "Alvaro Portoghese", as he calls it. "The last thing that Sotheby's had was about 10 years ago . " In 2005, they sold São Miguel, "for 180 thousand dollars, which remains the artist's record at auction," he says.

Not wanting to talk about the MNAA's request, advanced by the newspaper Público about two weeks ago, and which according to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage is being evaluated, Joaquim Caetano recalls that "we know nothing rigorously about Portuguese painting at the time his". Speaking of MNAA, whose request the PSD parliamentary group has already supported in a draft resolution handed over to the Assembly of the Republic, explains: "There is a portrait of King John I, who is the king of the time of Álvaro Pires, a painter of the time , and then we went immediately to the panels of São Vicente, of Nuno Gonçalves, half a century later, before we have nothing to grab us, to give us an idea of what a Portuguese artist would be doing. create a speech about what is this very period of shadow. "

"We already had opportunities to have other works by Álvaro Pires de Évora," argues Pedro Dias, who is surprised that the state, buying this auction, bought the work for a value that it considers "completely inflated", after rejecting others that more important. The professor, former director of the National Library and scientific adviser of the "Portuguese Wonders", recalls that at the time of the exhibition he organized, the work Santa Catarina and an Apostle, a one-meter high diptych sold by the former German Democratic Republic (RDA) and found by him "at an antique fair in Milan," was to be bought by the Portuguese Government, which authorized the sale, then suddenly rejected by the extinct Portuguese Institute of Museums. To this other board "which was on sale for 40,000 at the Wildenstein Gallery [in New York], and which no one wanted, and three other paintings in London, all more important. Now appears a campaign, launched for the press, to say that the picture is worth it. "

Nuno Vassallo e Silva, former Director General of Cultural Heritage, states that this "is an important acquisition, if the Portuguese State has availability", considering, however, that this acquisition must be made "within the reasonableness, not at any price". The art historian also believes that the fact that the MNAA's request is now public is "a way of putting pressure on the Ministry of Culture." And it is in him that tomorrow, at the beginning of the auction, the eyes will be put: in his absence or presence.

Olhos postos no Estado português amanhã no leilão da Sotheby"s.

Show opens an unprecedented and unavoidable door to the artist's work for the world and brings together 120 pieces including paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, photos and other rare documents gathered from collections in Latin America, Europe and the USA

Marcos of Modernism in Latin America, the works "Antropofagia" (1929), "Abaporu" (1928) and "A negra" (1923), by Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973), will be reunited again in an unprecedented meeting at MoMA - Museum of Modern Art of New York. The three paintings include "Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil", the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist in the United States, first shown at the Art Institute of Chicago and inaugurated on Sunday (11.02) at MoMA.

There are almost 120 selected pieces from collections in Latin America, Europe and USA, among paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, photos and other rare documents. It is the greatest international achievement of the artist, who deserves to have her legacy discovered and recognized in Brazil. It is the opportunity to present Tarsila's work to the world and observe it in the broader context of international vanguards.

The exhibition is organized by Venezuelan curator Luis Pérez-Oramas (MoMA) and curator Stephanie D'Alessandro (Art Institute of Chicago) and focuses on the artist's crucial production in the 1920s, from early Parisian works to emblematic modernist paintings produced in the Brazil, ending with his social works of the early 1930s.

The show also includes the study "Composition (Figure Only)" (1930) recently acquired by MoMA and now integrates its select collection. The drawing reveals a solitary woman with flowing hair in an arid landscape, suggesting a vast void. That year, the artist's marriage to Oswald de Andrade was over.
"Seven years ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago and asked to speak with the curator. She had heard of Tarsila do Amaral, but she was not a connoisseur yet. Then Stephanie got in touch with Luis Perez-Oramas and the two decided to create the exhibition, revealing an interesting look on the protagonism of Tarsila.

In my visits to the most important museums and art spaces in the world, I realize that there is still a lot to do internationally for the recognition of his work ", says Tarsilinha, Tarsila's grand-niece, who is the administrator of the artist's estate. "To reach MoMA in an individual show is to open an irremediable door to the world."

MoMA is one of the most well-known, important and influential museums in the world. His permanent collection includes works by Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky, Mondrian and Matisse, as well as pieces by Rodin, Calder, Moore and others in his rich Garden of Sculptures.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalog composed of paintings, drawings, letters and photographs, offering an overview of Tarsila's trajectory. Essays by Luis Pérez-Oramas and Stephanie D'Alessandro examine the production from the 1920s and its enduring legacy, and are accompanied by an illustrated documentary section, translation of critical texts, chronology and extensive bibliography.

TARSILA

Born in São Paulo at the turn of the 19th century, Tarsila studied piano, sculpture and drawing before leaving for Paris in 1920 to attend the Julian Academy. During subsequent seasons in the French capital, he studied with André Lhote, Albert Gleizes and Fernand Léger, fulfilling what he called his "military service in Cubism" and finally arriving at his artistic style characteristic of synthetic lines and sensual volumes showing landscapes and scenes regional palettes in a palette of colors.

The exhibition follows his travels between France and Brazil, passing through Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, his involvement with an increasingly international artistic community and his role in the emergence of modernism in Brazil. Conceived in 1928, the Abaporu screen inspired the anthropophagic movement, unleashed by Oswald de Andrade and Raul Bopp (1898-1984).

The exhibition "Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil" is supported by the International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, The Modern Women's Fund, the Vicky Foundation and Joseph Safra, Clarice Oliveira Tavares, Yvonne Dadoo Ader and Consulate General of Brazil in New York, as well as the Annual Exhibition Fund.

As três telas integram “Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil”, primeira grande exposição dedicada à artista nos Estados Unidos, exibida primeiramente no Art Institute of Chicago e inaugurada no domingo (11.02) no MoMA.

A exposição “Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil” conta com o apoio do International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, do The Modern Women’s Fund, da Fundação Vicky e Joseph Safra, de Clarice Oliveira Tavares, Yvonne Dadoo Ader e do Consulado Geral do Brasil em Nova York, além do Annual Exhibition Fund.
